Movies and Tea #17 – Crimson Peak

The next episode of Movies and Tea is here! This time, we talk about Crimson Peak as we near the end of this season with only one more movie in his current filmography left after this one. Crimson Peak is a lot of changes of direction for Guillermo Del Toro as he helms this gothic romance lead by Mia Wasikowska and Tom Hiddleston.

Head over to Movies and Tea to check out this new episode and give it a listen!

Movies and Tea

Having established his “Eye Protein” style while crafting love letters to giant monsters and the things which go bump in the night with “Crimson Peak” his intrest turned to the classic Hammer Horror films while drawing further inspiration from the likes of “House on Haunted Hill” and “The Shinning” to craft a Gothic love story hidden under the geise of a ghost story.

Released to middling fanfare the film remains much like his early films somthing of an underdissed entry in his filmography….until now.

Ultimate 2000s Blogathon: Hellboy (2004) & Hellboy II:The Golden Army (2008) Podcast by Movies and Tea

Check out the next entry for Ultimate 2000s Blogathon, which is our latest episode for Movies and Tea as we travel to 2004 and 2008 to review Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army with a special guest, Bubbawheat from Flights, Tights and Movie Nights.

Drew's Movie Reviews

If you know Kim, you know how many activities she is involved with. One of those activities is the Movies and Tea podcast with her co-host Elwood. Kim and Elwood break their show into seasons, with each season focusing on a different director’s filmography. This season, they are discussing films directed by Guillermo del Toro. In their most recent episode, the pair discussed Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army and have shared it with the blogathon. Have a listen below and head over to their archive to listen to the rest of their discussions.

Having already dabbled with a comic book movie with Blade 2, Del Toro’s return to the genre was much more of a passion project as he choose to adapt Mike Mignola’s cult indie comic Hellboy while at the same time bringing his own spin to the character and world he inhabits.

A Busy Day For Podcasts!

Last minute changes and something I should do more frequently is do a round-up of podcasts release!

Holiday hiatus is finally over and we’re getting back into the action of things on all projects and last week and specifically today, we just released three podcast episodes. Why not share it with all of you.

Let’s go project to project and at the same time, divert you all to their respective blogs so you can follow it if you are interested and haven’t already.

GAME WARP PODCAST

Game Warp Podcast kicked off the year pretty much in style.  This month, we had quite a few shows go up already. After ending the year with our Top 10 Games Reviewed in 2018 and our Year in Review 2018 (for gaming, of course), we started the year in a great way by doing a review for a new free Steam game called What Never Was which is only about an hour long so, the show itself is only 10 minutes long to avoid spoilers.

Fast forward back to today where we release our latest feature piece. Last year, we did our Top Anticipated Games as a written post, we’ve decided to change it to podcast format and combined it with the look forward to 2019 that we usually do. In today’s episode, we take turns to discuss our Top 15 Anticipated Games of 2019.

If you like gaming and haven’t followed us yet, you can find us over at our blog HERE.

MOVIES & TEA

Its been over a month since our last podcast for the second season. A lot of reasons for this but we finally did get around to recording and editing and it finally was released today. The next movie in our second season Guillermo Del Toro journey is The Devil’s Backbone, his third directed feature film. Its a movie that I’ve personally heard a lot of great things and have been recommended to me over and over again. Finally, I have ticked off my list and I’ll be getting the written review up there soon.

However, today is about the podcast and we had our first guest on Movies and Tea join us and that’s Greg from The Debatable Podcast/Action A Go Go. You can listen to it below.

http://a%20href=

You can also find our podcast on a ton of avenues including Podomatic, etc. If you haven’t followed us over at Movies and Tea, head over there via HERE.

We have our individual takes on each of the films we’ve done podcasts on and some other random features that matches with the director that we’re highlighting that season. 🙂

That’s it for this Podcast recap!
Things get back to normal programming soon!
I just wanted to give some love to my other projects today. 🙂

Movies and Tea #11 – Mimic

Season 2, Episode 2 of Movies and Tea is here! This time we look at Guillermo Del Toro’s Mimic and dive into the subway system of New York. Head over to the blog to give it a listen.

Remember that you can find us also on various other avenues as well:
Itunes – https://tinyurl.com/y8chswn3
Spotify – https://tinyurl.com/y82rqg84
Podomatic – https://tinyurl.com/ybrt4rru

Thanks for listening and feel free to share your thoughts on this film and the show!

Movies and Tea

Having announced himself as an exciting new voice in horror with “Cronos” Del Toro chose to follow it with his first English language feature “Mimic” based on the Donald A. Wollheim short story as Del Toro brought to the screen a tale of shape shifting bugs living in the New York system in a production hampered by the interference of producer Harvey Weinstein leaving Del Toro with a film he was unhappy with until his directors cut finally saw the light of day in 2011.

Come Join Us in the Booth as Elwood and Kim go on a bug hunt to see if this might be a hidden gem in Del Toro’s filmography.

My Weekly Adventures: When Work Takes Over…Again & The Game Plan (for the rest of 2018)

Welcome to the next weekly adventures. Maybe I should call this non-adventures? I’m not sure much happened other than myself sitting around watching TV, cleaning or going nuts over work, work and more work at the office and at home or multitasking a lot. So, let me think back about what to talk about  and whether something interesting happened over the last two weeks and hopefully this post won’t be a complete disaster….

Battle of Ingredients

Battle of Ingredients is back on track now. We also went back to our indoors non-BBQ format. This time we had the star of the show that Phoebe took care of with our friend’s winter melon. As for myself, I went the normal route and did something much more simple trying out a new spice for the chicken dish and then made some fall appropriate dessert. This time, we went into a true collab format and Phoebe tested out her recipe-writing skills.

You can head over and check out the post HERE.

Movies and Tea – Season 2: Guillermo Del Toro

Season 2 for Movies and Tea has officially started. I know that I just posted this yesterday as part of the Halloween Marathon. I have been so proud of this project that I just can’t help to share it in case anyone missed it yesterday. This season, we’re checking out Guillermo Del Toro’s films. For myself, Del Toro got on my radar after Pan’s Labyrinth but how were his films before that one? That is my journey in this Movies and Tea season. Of course, we kick off with his debut directorial feature, Cronos.

As a final shoutout, we are looking for guests this season. Drop me an email at kim.tranquildreams@gmail.com with which of Del Toro’s films you want to talk about and we’ll see if we can work something out.

Halloween Marathon 2018

Halloween Marathon

Halloween Marathon 2018 is done and over with. A lot of films I had planned didn’t happen but still, I still managed to get a few things watched and some new series as well. I’m actually quite pleased with how it turned out especially since there was a mix of reviews and not just movies. Its how I would prefer to do this. If you missed any of it, the Halloween marathon page is updated. You can find it HERE.

NaNoWriMo 2018 – Best of Luck to Participants

As a participant of NaNoWriMo, I always take some time to encourage all of you participating in the month-long grind to get a first draft of a novel written for a grand total of 50,000 words. While I do have an idea that I want to write about, I have decided to not write one. I’m still on the fence so who knows, maybe I’ll still jump in later on. I mean, I have pulled off a homerun week of 30,000 one year so its still possible. However, my plan is to edit a novel that I wrote during NaNoWriMo. Not for publishing, just so that I can get one of these done completely. I know I say it every year but I’ll figure out some way to stuff it into my overloaded schedule as it is. Either way, for you courageous challengers, best of luck! Just remember, that you can do it. Stay on track and remember that editing is the after process. Just keep on writing and 50,000 words will come to you or even more. 🙂

What’s Coming Up – Game Plan

2018 hasn’t exactly gone the way I had anticipated. As some of you have seen, I’ve kind of slowed down operations overall on all the projects this past month (if not the past few months). Reason being that I just wasn’t motivated and it felt like so much other personal life things were weighing down on me that I was just exhausted. In fact, if you look at all the stuff I’ve watched versus how many of those still need to be written, its endless. In terms of movies, I’m relatively on track especially since I do a lot of double features but TV binges are just way behind so much that I’ve started rewatching some of the series in order to do the binge post.

With that said, the new year is in two months. December usually goes out to holiday films. I probably will need some twist to it unless I watch a lot of Hallmark movies. It really depends what Netflix has to offer so I’ll talk about it later. November has that added task mentioned above to edit one of my past novels from NaNoWriMo. I have probably 4 or 5 written. With that said, 2019 means not only that the blogiversary is coming up in mid January but also what changes to be made come the new year. Its been on my mind for a while now since I can’t do everything and keep up with my two other podcasts. Something has to give and its where its getting me in a little bit of an unsure phase of whether its because I just lacked motivation this year that things fell behind or if I had better time management that it would have worked out with the current system.

Anyways, not much of a game plan but the goal is to get a lot of those TV binges and Double Features movie reviews out over the next two months to try to catch up. I’m getting back a lot of the writing motivation so hopefully all the projects will be up and running now. Movies and Tea already is in Season 2 as mentioned before so that is already a positive start!

Movies and Tea #10 – Cronos

Its time to kick off Season 2 of Movies and Tea Podcast after a little break on our end. This season, we’re looking at Guillermo Del Toro’s films and we start with his debut, Cronos which gives a new spin on vampires. Head over to our blog and listen to the podcast! Perfectly timed for Halloween on top of that! Enjoy and give us your thoughts on Cronos or the show!

We are looking for guests for some of the shows. If you are interested, drop us an email and we’ll see if we can work something out.

Movies and Tea

Elwood and Kim return from thier break with a new season and a new director’s filmography to dive into as this season they turn thier attention to the films of the visionary Guillermo del Toro whose love of horror and fairytales have lead to him crafting some of the most original cinema of the last few years.

Kicking off this season is Del Toro’s feature debut “Cronos” which sees him bring his own spin to the vampire mythos as a clockwork scarab which grants eternal life is discovered by an elderly antiques dealer.

Calling Out for Guillermo Del Toro Fans!

Hey everyone!

A little announcement and invite to everyone today!

Movies and Tea Podcast is about to head into our second season. After a great first season focused on Paul W.S. Anderson and a 3 episode After Hours session (and even had a little break to catch up on all the written material), we are ready to move onto the next director. If you are unfamiliar with Movies and Tea. Its a movie podcast hosted by myself and Elwood Jones where we choose one director every season to look at their directorial work. It acts at both a re-evaluation of their works as well as filling in those empty spots of films that we haven’t seen from director’s that intrigue us.

If you want to check out the episodes from Season 1, you can head over to the blog linked above or to Podomatic, iTunes, Spotify…we’re in a lot of places.

This season, we are talking about Guillermo Del Toro’s films. The change from last season, we want to open up invites to see who would be interested in joining us on some of the episodes and specifically which film you want to talk about. Suffice to say that Guillermo Del Toro is definitely more loved than our first season but his work and progression of style and film material has its diversity. For myself, I haven’t seen any of his earlier works so its going to be a journey to discover how his debut material is.

The list of films we are looking at this season are in the banner above:

  • Cronos
  • Mimic
  • Devil’s Backbone
  • Blade 2 & Hellboy
  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • Pacific Rim
  • Crimson Peak
  • The Shape of Water

That is really all I have to say. To keep things a little more secretive, you can drop me an email if you are interested and which film you would like to talk about and/or leave me a comment to tell me that you sent me an email at kim.tranquildreams@gmail.com so that I know to keep an eye out for it. In the email, you can leave me the film you want to talk about, and recording availability. If you don’t know yet, we can work it out and see if our time zones can all jive.

We were super happy with how the first season went so incredibly excited to talk about Guillermo Del Toro’s works.
We’re looking forward to sharing this podcast experience with all of you!
One last thing: If you know anyone that is interested, please pass on the message!

Double Feature: Bullhead (2011) & The Shape of Water (2017)

Next up in the recaps is an odd combo, I’d guess. Probably should have taken the next double features movies (since I’m way ahead on watching movies but way behind on reviewing them). Either way, it is what it is. As I work through the Shudder movies, Bullhead came up which I wanted to watch because I love Matthias Schoenaerts. And then, I remembered that I had a rental that was almost due for The Shape of Water so here we are with two features with nothing in common except that they are both dramas.

Let’s just check it out!

Bullhead (original title: Rundskop, 2011)

Bullhead

Director (and writer): Michael R. Roskam

Cast: Matthias Schoenaerts, Jeroen Perceval, Jeanne Dandoy, Tibo Vandenborre,  Frank Lamars

Sint-Truiden, Belgium. Jacky, a young cattle farmer who is constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, is approached by a veterinarian to make a deal with a notorious beef trader. – IMDB

Before we start this up, there’s a serious language labelling issue on Shudder. It said this was in English but its not. Bullhead is in Limburgish, Dutch and French. The French parts are the only ones that I had any ease at watching although it was fairly good subtitles. Regardless of that, Bullhead is quite an interesting movie. I don’t think that the crime part did a whole lot for me but the intriguing part is in watching Jacky, played by Matthias Schoenaerts as he grasps his character so well, with its aggression, pain and complex emotions. Its more of a character study than anything because everyone lacks depth in comparison to Jacky who we start learning about his past and why he is the way he is. There is a lot of unspoken moments and I love movies that can deliver those moments well.

Honestly, this movie is fairly slow-paced and requires a little bit of patience. It is a dramatic and at times, a little off-putting. Overall, Bullhead might not exactly be a great crime thriller that it was cut out for but Matthias Schoenaerts taking on the role of the main character Jacky is exceptional.

The Shape of Water (2017)

the shape of water

Director (and co-writer): Guillermo del Toro

Cast: Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, Doug Jones

At a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a lonely janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity. – IMDB

Exceptional style and great visuals are two things to always expect in Guillermo del Toro films and The Shape of Water is no exception. There is a real balance between its colorful characters, thanks to an outstanding cast, along with its music/soundtrack paired up with the great visuals and set and how can we forget the Amphibian Man. While I can’t say that I think the story was particularly great, it did hit a lot of great elements and it derived from a story using a mute girl, played by Sally Hawkins who can’t seem to fit in and be heard but finds her place in only a few friends but it seems to truly make her come alive when she encounters the Amphibian Man. The lack of talking on her part emphasizes on how skillful Sally Hawkins was in her role as it gave her moments a lot of time to just imagine what she would do next but never quite know until she’s doing it.

As great as the visuals and the music here, the cast here shines also. Sally Hawkins, as I mentioned above is great in her role and hard to imagine any chemistry between her and an Amphibian Man but she manages to get there and at the same time, also let her character grow and develop. Octavia Spencer is always a joy to watch on screen. She has so much charisma and attitude that she truly embraces her role while Richard Jenkins plays a character somewhat the opposite of her character but also shows his worth and how everyone of them has their struggle to find their worth as well. And its how these two people are also friends with Sally Hawkins’ character. Now, let me take a breath as I talk about Michael Shannon because oh my goodness, is he a great actor? You can probably go back to the movies I’ve reviewed of his and you’ll see me say that also. I never think about Michael Shannon but whenever he shows up in a movie, he just is awesome and its no different here as he plays the villain. I actually had actual moments of disgust and hatred towards his character by the end. Its really a great thing one someone can carry a role in such a believable way.

Overall, there is so much to love about The Shape of Water. I don’t know if its Best Picture material since I haven’t seen the other nominations but this one is a must-watch. Its not quite as spectacular as some of del Toro’s earlier work but it tells a fantastic story and the soundtrack and visuals are great. There are some great sets here. What I love most about this story is the way they end it. Some people mess up the ending but this one I think ended it in such a smart way.

That’s it for this double feature!
Have you seen these films?
