Music Obsessions – April 2021

Welcome to April’s Music Obsessions! 2021 is going by so fast mostly because I’m drowning in work that everything is just a huge crazy rush that feels some days to be so hopelessly endless. However, luckily there’s some great music to get me through it all. Plus, a lot of TV shows (survival/idol competitions shows) to get me through it all so a lot of the latest music is from there but introducing me to the originals. Let’s check it out!

辣辣辣 La La La – 熊貓堂 Produce Pandas

Nothing like a fun little song to get things going. The most unusual group of guys to join the Youth With You 3 idol survival competition would be the Produce Pandas. Its a little sad that in the first elimination that 3 of them has gone home however the preliminary show had their original song which was a lot of fun and has been circulating on my playlist for a while. I’d definitely hope that whether or not the other 2 make it that these guys can keep going in their Produce Pandas group and making some fun upbeat music.

Who is MVP 誰是MVP – 潘瑋柏 Wilber Pan

Its hard to believe that this past week celebrates Wilber Pan’s 20th anniversary since he debut in the entertainment business and has released a lot of hits, a lot of them being really catchy songs. Plus, he also was one of the few who focused primarily on rap and hip hop music as his main path. Its been a long time since I’ve heard this song but Youth With You 3 used it as a performance song and the performance itself turned out to be pretty decent as well and reviving this one on my playlist.

成全 Step aside – 林宥嘉Yoga Lin

I haven’t really listened to Yoga Lin a lot while knowing that he is quite a talented singer. Lately, its been playing as background on a Twitch streamer that I’ve been following this past while discovering this performance. The song itself has a good beat and decent lyrics. Definitely can see the talent and going to try to check out some more of his music.

We Rock – Youth With You 3 Theme Song

Suffice to say that Youth With You S3 has been a big focus on my TV binging life lately. The theme song this year is pretty great, not that the previous ones weren’t good either. The dance apparently is really hard but I’m not a dancer so what do I know. I do like this song a lot and rather fitting for the whole show.

Chuang To-Gather, Go! – Chuang 2021 Theme Song

While I haven’t been following the Produce Camp 2021/Chuang 2021 season as much other than some news or whatnot, the theme song this year is pretty good and wraps up the goal of trying to build an international idol boy group. Honestly, the international trainees is pretty good so I think that’s a pretty solid plan overall. However, I’m not here to talk about show but this song is also very good. They made it in various versions in different languages because of the different nationalities: Japanese, English, Thai and Russian.

時間都去哪兒了 Where Has Time Gone – Youth With You 3 ‘We Want’ Stage Performance

Consider this a bonus since I don’t usually put stage performances here however, I couldn’t find the original version other than on Spotify. This performance is really good though as they added in their own rap and ended the song with messages from phone conversations with their family. The song is for mothers as it talks about their sacrifices they make for their children. The trainees wrote their own rap parts to incorporate to their own stories. While the performance isn’t perfect, it is a very heartfelt performance and probably one of my faves so far.

That’s it for this Music Obsessions!

Music Obsessions – March 2020

Welcome to March 2020! Its time to do a monthly roundup of music that’s been on my playlist! Its been quite a mixed bag and some of it is from various phases I’ve gone through and shows I’ve been watching and whatnot.

Just Let It Be – Dimash

A few years ago, I heard Dimash’s first performance on I am a Singer 2017 snippet and it was awesome! He sang this French song called S.O.S. Although there were pronunciation issues, his voice is amazing because of its range and control. I hadn’t realized that he had released music since then but then I found this song and its just awesome. Its nice to see him break out of his classic music and head into something that brings both this classical skills to something a little fast-paced and modern.

Amazing [Find Yourself Ending Theme] – 林世民 Shimin Lin

I just finished Find Yourself this past week and TV binge is coming up soon. A little backlog this year so it’ll happen soon. The ending theme for Find Yourself was unusually an English song, albeit a little language issues in the lyrics but the rhythm and the singing is pretty soothing. Because of that, then it played during the series, it actually matched a lot of the scenes well and this one kind of really grew on me over the process of watching the 40 episodes.

皮囊 Pi Nang – 蕭敬騰 Jam Hsiao

I can’t believe that I haven’t shared songs from Jam Hsiao sooner. This Taiwanese singer actually came to fame around the time that I had fallen out of Chinese music so he’s somewhat of a newer discovery. Jam Hsiao is part of The Singer 2020 this year and he has a killer voice with a wonderful grasp on the falsetto and higher pitches plus he likes fast, quirky and more hard rock style plus adding on his performances, it all works really well. This song is amazing. Honestly, it seems like a fun one to just sing to your heart’s content (even if its not going to be easy to sing).

Dad Where Are We Going 5 Theme Song

I went back the past month to check out Season 5 of Dad Where Are We Going because of my recent wrapping up of Ashes of Love and my new obsession with the actor Alan Deng. In this reality show where celebrity dads take their young children on various trips to challenge and build their bond, Deng Lun takes on the trial dad where he takes care of a little girl who seems to have some social media fame. Its just incredibly cute and heartwarming to watch. This theme song is so cute that I can’t help to listen to it non-stop. Plus, almost all of these dads were celebrities that I grew up with: Jordan Chan (from Young and Dangerous series), Will Liu (Taiwanese singer where I went through a phase of loving his album), Wu Chun (from ex-Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit).

等爱 -[“海棠经雨胭脂透”片尾曲MV] – 邓伦 & 阿兰

Well, I did say that I’ve been looking up Alan Deng’s stuff so while I haven’t went on to other TV series yet but I did find that he has a talent for singing and this song for last year’s series Blossom in Heart is a beautiful duet that he does. It has some more harmonizing moments with the female singer Ah Lan, who I also do like her music. I’m still debating whether to watch this series since it seems to hit a few things I don’t like about TV series from the snippets here so we’ll see. However, this song has been playing on repeat! Love it!

That’s it for this Music Obsessions!
Its been a pretty solid month for music discoveries!
I actually had to make some decisions to not overload!

Music Obsessions [January 2017]

Welcome to 2017’s first Music Obsessions!

Its only been 2 weeks since the Christmas Special and music has been a little slow. I have to say that Duck Tales Theme with the new cast is still a huge obsession of mine. If you missed it, you can find it in the post HERE. That also has given me some odd feeling of revisiting older songs that I used to like a lot, which means some Hong Kong Pop. It probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but it made up a lot of time in my life plus, it also shows a nostalgic thing I have going for some Hong Kong movies that I’ve been missing a lot of late. Some I do own but others, I really need to find, like do a huge Young and Dangerous movie marathon when I compile all of them.  Or like a Nicholas Tse movie marathon.

Let’s check it out!

戰無不勝 – Jordan Chan
(from Young and Dangerous 4)

友情歲月 – Ekin Cheng
(from Young and Dangerous)

前前後後左左右右 – Nicholas Tse
(from Young and Dangerous prequel)

Young and Dangerous is a huge franchise in Hong Kong movies. Its rather violent but focuses on this incredibly loyalty and friendship. It also brought out some of the most iconic roles from Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan along with their friends, Jerry Lam and Michael Tse. I have yet to see all of them but I’ve watched a few of the spinoffs. I just love Ekin and Jordan so much, even though now, they aren’t quite on the scene anymore. Trust me, when I get all the movies, that Young and Dangerous marathon is happening. And while Nicholas Tse might be more behind the scenes these days, and was considered the “bad boy” of the industry back in the early days of his career, I still loved him quite a bit. In fact, I still love him a lot now. And that is why the remaining two songs are also his, also in movies that he’s done.

You Can’t Stop Me – Nicholas Tse, Stephen Fung & Sam Lee
(from Gen-X Cops)

潛龍勿用 – Nicholas Tse
(from Heroes in Love)

It is funny how researching for Music Obsessions sometimes is a ton of fun as I look at how some of these people have changed in the recent years. For example, I didn’t know that Sam Lee is actually part of LMF which is a rap group in Hong Kong. No one assumes that Hong Kong and rap go together and they are the rare one which is pretty behind the scenes now as well but they  have some good stuff that raps about life and politics and things that matter in Hong Kong mostly, while at times uses some vulgar language, I do enjoy listening to as well. Maybe I’ll show some of that later this year. Also, how I own Heroes in Love but never actually watched it yet, which is a anthology of sort with three short stories about love and obsession. Oh yeah, and Gen-X Cops is really fun and good plus it has the cameo of Jackie Chan in there.

A much more talky Music Obsessions than normal but these are also more upbeat Hong Kong Pop. Hope you enjoyed it!
Have you seen any of these movies? Do you know the Young and Dangerous franchise?
