Music Obsessions – April 2019

Music in the past month has been such a huge part in my life. I’ve done quite a bit of discovering and its been linked to a lot of other stuff like TV series and variety shows and whatnot. There’s some English and some Chinese songs even if all of the selections have been mostly released in Hong Kong/China. Its a nice variety and actually had these few songs locked into this obsessions post well before the month ended bumping everything else to next month because these songs are still on repeat.

LOVE BATTLE – MIKE ANGELO

I’ve talked about Mike Angelo before in a What’s Up post as I was watching TV series simultaneously where he plays the leading man. With that said, he has been around on variety shows and whatnot but I’ve truly dived into what he’s done this past month. I like the TV series he chooses to do and I also like his music quite a bit plus, he has improved his Mandarin a ton. While this is an English language song, the energy and beat in it is pretty great. I can’t say the same for the lyrics but this is one of those songs that I like a lot for the feeling of song and the energetic vibe from it. It’s really cool.

SHAPING 塑造 – NICHOLAS TSE 謝霆鋒 FEAT JACKSON WANG 王嘉爾

With all the singles that Nicholas Tse has been dropping, I keep wondering whether he is gearing up for a new album at some point. That would be awesome. Fangirling away here! Its been the longest fangirl phase I’ve had for anyone. He’s a great actor but I love him for his music so its even more awesome that in this music video, he goes back to how I’ve always imagined him in the more rock vibe and jamming on his guitar. I love the video and I love the song.

WE WERE DANCING – MIKE ANGELO

While Mike Angelo’s Mandarin isn’t really good, its improved a lot and the fact that he’s taking the step to make Chinese songs is really quite impressive. With that said, the video is a lot of fun. The beat of the music and the moves are really good. There are super over the top kind of moments but I think because Mike is such a charming guy that it works. Immense amount of joy whenever I hear this one and watch the video.

WISH – FEI QI MING 费启鸣

QiMing Fei came to my attention when I saw him in Lipstick Prince and I think the thing that stands out the most about him is on that show was his really great voice. When I went looking up more stuff, I found a few songs and this one is my favorite one.

Disguise 偽裝 – DZ 大壯

I had shared a previous song from DZ before. This guy is truly fantastic as both having a very unique voice but also the lyrics that he writes has so much meaning to it. Its one of those rare things that have mostly gotten lost over modern music. It really resonated with me from the first stanza. Truly a one of a kind singer and lyricist and I look forward to seeing what else he puts out.

想你了 Thinking of You – SNH 48 Jingyi Ju 鞠婧祎 (Mr. Swimmer Opening Theme)

The TV series that I had watched along with My Amazing Boyfriend 2 with Mike Angelo starring in was Mr. Swimmer. I’ll share the TV binge on Mr. Swimmer at some point (the backlog for TV is ridiculous at this point that I don’t know when anything will be done). This show had its good and bad elements but the opening theme is absolutely awesome plus the lyrics are super cute and the rhythm is very nice.

To Be Your Love – Fiction Guo 郭俊辰 (Accidentally in Love OST)

Consider this my March obsession in terms of TV series! Netflix needs to acquire a few more of these or green light a season 2 for this show. This song is really fantastic: lighthearted and cute. I don’t have the English translation of it but its on Netflix and if you watch the series there, its all translated (subtitles 😉 ) Either way, this is the main theme however, this is the version in the show sang by the male lead. Its been on my mind for a long time so I couldn’t leave it out!

That’s it for this Music Obsessions!
Some really awesome music! I know that I’m starting to do a lot of Chinese music!
But then, you all are capable of finding other music whereas I’d like to highlight some Chinese music which might not have an entry point for some.

However, if you interested in finding an entry point for Asian music, I would love for you to head over to Asian Cinema Film Club’s blog as they share a monthly mixtape segment. You can find it HERE.

What’s Up Week 11: TV Binging Through Staycation

Welcome to Week 11 of What’s Up! This week has been a little bit mixed. Some things happened more than others. Its what happens when I spend a lot of time having time off. I’m going to be super honest that I have massive TV binge tendancies that started the earliest so it is my best destressor. So, no doubt its a huge part of what I do when I go on staycation (regardless of the backlog).

READING

two sisters of borneo

  • The Two Sisters of Borneo by Ian Hamilton (Review)

Currently reading: Obsidio

I am focusing on getting back to book series that I have put down. Finishing The sixth installment of Ava Lee series, The Two Sisters of Borneo, was a great reading experience. Still a pageturner series, which is always great. While I have the next book released which was the prequel to the series (odd, right?), I decided to go back to The Illuminae Files final book in the trilogy, Obisido. I loved the first two books so much that I just couldn’t resist. I’m still fairly early in the reading for Obsidio but the book tends to go pretty quickly due to its immersiveness.

PLAYING

  • Candies ‘n Curses
  • Liar!
  • Mortal Kombat X

I went lazy on gaming this staycation. Probably shouldn’t because well, we do have a game to review but I didn’t end up starting it until late. Prioritizing things that probably could have been pushed later in the schedule. Oh well, what’s done is done. I did a lot of mobile gaming. To be accurate, I played Liar! which is a visual novel sort of game which I’ll talk about in the next Mobile Games Roundup and went back to play Candies ‘n Curses that I talked up in the last Mobile Games Roundup (HERE) and also went back to polish some MKX skills. There’s not a whole lot to talk about there.

WATCHING

a monster calls

  • A Monster Calls
  • Battleship

Movie watching has definitely slowed down and I’ve hinted it enough. I did need a little break from it after the immense blogathon and marathon craze. It will pick up after I get through some piled up backlog, which should bring forth at least 2 more double features. With that said, the highlight movie (not that we had a lot to choose from) is A Monster Calls. I had a few issues with pacing for it but there is a lot of style and visuals to it and a nice twist to it all that I appreciated more and more as I watched further into the story. As for Battleship, I’ll talk about it when I do the double feature when we get there in a few weeks.

BINGING

queer eye

  • The Big Family Cooking Showdown (Season 2, 2019)
  • Queer Eye (Season 3, 2019)

Currently binging: My Amazing Boyfriend 2, The Singer 2019, Mr. Swimmer, My Little One 2

The currently watching (that I haven’t discussed too much of in the last two weeks) has been pretty good. Some of them are nearing their final episodes. There is 8 more episodes of My Amazing Boyfriend 2 to go, 2 to 3 more episodes of The Singer 2019 and probably the same for My Little One 2. As for Mr. Swimmer, everything is out but I’ve slowed down as the drama has intensified but I’m about 10 episodes  more to go to wrap that up. As for what I did finish, I binged some newer shows (which I’ve prioritized TV binges on…or trying to) and that’s The Big Family Cooking Showdown Season 2 and Queen Eye Season 3.  The latter was almost a one day binge and that is just because its so awesome.

That’s it for this week’s What’s Up!
What have you been reading/watching/binging/playing?

What’s Up Week 10: There is never enough TV series…

Ten weeks have gone by this year! Its incredible to think that a lot of happened. March is a bit two-fold. On one hand, everything has balanced out as the movie watching blogathons and marathons have both simmered away, leading to a shift in finding other little things to work on. I have a pretty good idea on what to tentatively schedule in for a lot of these sections to clear out a lot of commitments that have been just sitting in the background. I’m catching up with stuff and also trying to stay current and minimize backlog. Hopefully in due time, you will start seeing a lot of these things pop up in written form (or video format. I realize I’ve been neglecting it and not going to lie that I forgot…).

READING

two sisters of borneo

Currently reading: The Two Sisters of Borneo by Ian Hamilton

The Two Sisters of Borneo is still a great ride even at three quarters into the book. There’s this really great thing but for once in a pretty long while, I finally figured out a part of the twist from the clues in the novel. Its something to be happy about mostly because this one takes some unique turns in the plot usually . Its still very fast paced so I’m looking forward to see how the last quarter goes.

PLAYING

gunhouse

  • Gunhouse

Currently playing: Eastshade

Talking about gaming, I always take little breaks from open world games here and there so its a bit slower but the husband wanted to give Gunhouse a whirl. We got it for Playstation Plus free games and its something that looked like its right up my alley. We both ended up playing it on our own accounts. I’m putting together a video for it soon for the Game Warp channel.

WATCHING

pacific rim

  • Wall-E (rewatch)
  • Up (rewatch)
  • Knowing
  • Pacific Rim (rewatch – Review)

Lots of great movies rewatched this week. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the only film that I walked in on my husband watching (and have no desire to start at the beginning after finishing it). Knowing is really quite a let-down, mostly when it has the twist which is too far-fetched for my liking. Either way, the double features for all these random movies are coming up soon. They are in the works. As for Wall-E and Up, you should have already seen it go up as my blogathon finale triple feature HERE. And as for Pacific Rim, that is for the next Movies and Tea episode…well..we’re a bit ahead of the game because I’m going to be coming up to a busy time so it’ll be in 2 episodes. In the meantime, I did link an older review for when I first watched Pacific Rim. It probably isn’t too good in the writing (but I didn’t check so who knows.)

BINGING

mr. swimmer

  • Lipstick Prince

Currently binging: My Amazing Boyfriend 2, The Big Family Cooking Showdown (Season 2), The Singer 2019, My Little One 2, Mr. Swimmer

I know it sounds kind of crazy and you’re asking the heck is Lipstick Prince. To be honest, I’ve watched only all the episodes I had access to and could find on Youtube. There are few that I haven’t found yet but I already have a very good idea of the show itself. It is pretty funny and cute to watch. Its structured a little like the idol dramas centralizing around four young male celebrities as they get distributed tasks to put make up on one female celebrity and try to charm them throughout. Its only 10 episodes but very hard to find everything as its not through the normal channels. I’ll do a little write-up on it soon.

On the other hand, what’s life if not adding on even more TV series, right? I’m starting to feel like I have some TV series attention deficiency issue. I promise you that I started Mr. Swimmer for a reason. Well, one reason…because I was looking up Mike Angelo because of My Amazing Boyfriend 2 and that is also how I landed on Lipstick Prince. I’m almost halfway through Mr. Swimmer (not quite) and while it has some very comedic bits, it is also very dramatic and nearing the halfway point, the drama is getting a bit high, the situation is getting a bit frustrating and some characters are genuinely pissing me off. So I’m taking it a bit slower as to not raise the blood pressure too much on my end.

That’s it for this What’s Up!
What have you been up to?
