love potions and other calamities

Rosie McLeod, pub proprietor and a gifted herbalist of local renown, is thirty-nine and holding, but only just. The talons of her fortieth birthday are in her back and her bloody, bloody husband hasn’t laid a lustful hand on her for months.

Rosie sets out to discover if her husband is having an affair, using deductive powers based solely on the careful preparation of plants and herbs. But as her well-laid plans entirely fall apart, the sighting of a large black cat sets off another chain of events.

Rosie now realises that a psychopath is on the loose and that she’s been selected as his next victim. – Goodreads

After reading two novels by Charlie Laidlaw, there is no doubt that he is a writer with a lot of creativity as he mixes genres and adds in very unique twists. It is usually those sharp ideas that makes his books such a pleasure to read and also why Love Potions and Other Calamities was one that I wanted to read. Blending mystery, romance and humor is a risky move especially the last third of the equation as humor is such a subjective element. Luckily, the humor does deliver most of the time especially with some of the outrageous things that do happen and the fact that a lot of the doing wrong things with the best intentions actually do backfire a lot and ends up creating some right especially as it highlights some of the elements of mystery.

Let’s start with the positives! Love Potions and Other Calamities is a charming little book. One of the main elements of charms is the characters that truly do come to life through the words. There’s a heavy focus on Rosie, a woman awaiting her 40th birthday like its her death bed and really having a heavy hit of self-esteem issues about her attraction to her husband Jack due to lack of intimacy. Her solution is to make him drinks and food that she believes that he likes to build up the urge and motivation at the very least. However, things go awry when he doesn’t really like those things and it ends up somewhere else and consumed by someone else. As we read these parts, its truly a “Oh no” moment over and over again as things go really awkward and at times bad, creating situations that eventually have more misunderstandings and it all propels to have even more funny and awkward and weird moments.

On the other side, the story also focuses on another couple with Mara being a younger girl and waitress at Rosie and Jack’s pub (I think, its a pub) and the events ends up turning out better for her as her relationship with her cop boyfriend Richie improves. Richie becomes the center of the mystery as he starts working hard to connect the dots of the mysterious events happening. Richie and Mara bring in some elements of intimacy and younger relationships but also bringing forward a character like Richie from outside that helps have that connection to explain some of the beliefs and history that hangs in this town.

While at the same time, there is some political issues with voting around the corner and all kinds of characters that pop in the scene. They all have their own charm and intrigue as it all adds to how the situations are blown up to incredible proportions and Rosie starts to wonder whether what she did is right and the issue with the black cat being a sign towards witches and bad omens. There’s a lot of little bits and pieces that work well together. The little description of different types of herbs at the beginning of each chapter actually did bring a lot of fun elements to this as it was the extra bits of knowledge and gave it a lot of substance.

With that said, one element that wasn’t done was well was the execution. The pacing was a bit odd at times. At the same time, the separation of chapters and the abrupt jumps from one scene to the next sometimes made it slightly hard to follow especially as the situation got more complex in the middle section. Its really the one issue that was a tad annoying but as the characters became more familiar, the issue in the second half becomes less of an issue.

Overall, Love Potions and Other Calamities is a pretty decent novel. The idea of using potions and witches and a little town with their own beliefs and history gave it a lot of character. Not to mention the characters here were also rather charming and had its unique elements that made them a lot of fun to read. Sure, there’s some execution issues but its still a fun book with some unexpected twists to the outcomes of the misdirected potion (or poison?) attempts, misunderstanding and other sudden scenarios. This one is a fun read.

What’s Up 2019: Week 50

Its Week 50 already! That is absolutely crazy! The end of the year is just around the corner and its been a lot of wrap-up and thinking more about the next year and of course, holiday stuff. There is also a bit of holiday fatigue and work rush before holidays factored in here, so things have slowed down or been a bit irregular. Anyways, lets see whats going on!

  • Love Potions & Other Calamities by Charlie Laidlaw

Currently reading: Legends of Exile

I am working on double speed to get things back on track on the reading front and took some extra time to finally finish Love Potions and Other Calamities. I literally just finished so the review is coming up this week. And then, its time to finish Legends of Exile to get these things done and next year a clean slate. I have accepted that I won’t on the books make the Goodreads challenge evem if I read 3 book packs at the beginning of the year that only counted as one entry. So, I guess I did… I’ll know when I do the final overview of 2019 😉

PLAYING

Roki

carrion

  • Roki Demo
  • Carrion Demo
  • Wooden Nickel Demo
  • Chicory: A Colorful Tale Demo

The Game Awards happened as well and of course, Game Warp did watch it and did a recap on the winners as well as the trailers and impressions. Some fun stuff. You can read it HERE. This is the first year for The Game Awards to work with Steam to have a 48 hour Steam Game Festival which is like most game festival concepts to play demos of upcoming games and that was most of my gaming as I tried to play as much as I could and ended up playing 4 demos (out of 8 or 10). It has made me anticipate both Roki and Carrion. Different gaming styles but both so fun in different ways. I did record the playthrough of those demos so it’ll be going up on the channel soon. Its in the process of revival.

WATCHING

Klaus

  • Hulk (2003)
  • Let It Snow (2019, Review)
  • Holiday Joy (2016, Review)
  • Shazam! (2019)
  • Klaus (2019)

Other than Hulk which was for Movies and Tea, its been a lot of holiday viewing. You can argue that Shazam isn’t but it is set during Christmas with snow and Christmas decorations everywhere so it counts even if I do admit it was simply added in because the rental was going to expire and I almost forgot about it. My fave goes to Klaus which is a new Netflix Original about the beginnings of Christmas and Santa Claus in an original story and has voice acting by J.K. Simmons and Joan Cusack.

BINGING

who's the murderer 5

  • Zumbo’s Just Desserts (rewatch, Review)

Currently binging: Who’s the Murderer 5, The Brightest Star in the Sky, Viva La Romance (Season 1)

I am watching VERY little TV right now as I am trying to read and catch on blog posts on all projects so I did rewatch Zumbo’s Just Desserts which is my go-to for rewatch and background when I work. Other than that, I am still rewatching The Brighest Star in the Sky on Huace Channel and wanted to finish Viva La Romance Season 1 before finishing Season 2 and 3. Its almost done but I do have to give mega props to Who’s The Murderer Season 5 which has really taken a lovely turn this season and become not only one that has some pretty good cases and mysteries but has been edited in a way that makes it somewhat have a better line of link to make educated guesses on the culprits.

That’s it for Week 50 recap!

What’s Up 2019: Week 49

Tranquil Dreams (50)

Welcome to Week 49! 2019 is moving so fast now and I have some big plans coming into play for 2020 as I’ve been doing some behind the scenes planning (where I will discuss further in the New Year’s post). However, this past week has been rather good with a good deal of everything going on..maybe except reading, but at least its moved forward…

Let’s check it out!

READING

love potions and other calamities

Currently reading: Love Potions and Other Calamities (32% done)

I know I know…reading is really taking a hit. I haven’t been really in the reading mood and it has nothing to do with this book because its actually quite entertaining and has a rather unique story and I wouldn’t expect anything less from Charlie Laidlaw whose played with some fun twists on ideas before. This should be finished by the end of the current week and review will go up right away after that. I have a lot of reading to catch up to so I’ll be getting back on track sooner rather than later..not to mention I still have a book to finish up that I started which is also a commitment.

PLAYING

rusty lake roots

  • Rusty Lake Roots
  • Rusty Lake Paradise

Next up: The Room Three

I finally wrapped up all the Rusty Lake games up to date. Their new game is supposed to be VR, I think so probably I won’t have a chance to check it out. Either way, Rusty Lake Roots was a mountain to climb with about 5 hours of gameplay as you played each character from start to end and then the little stories in between to progress. It had 33 levels altogether with some puzzles that were easy and it got a little more complicated by the end but it always had a relatively logical solution to. Rusty Lake Paradise is also a good game but where it falls short is that there are some puzzles which were just a shot in the dark and trial and error in some ways (or at least it felt that way) and that got a bit frustrating. Detailed reviews coming up over at Game Warp soon! I’m deciding my next game to play in advance now so that gaming becomes less of a neverending choice and something a little more planned out.

WATCHING

The Greatest Showman

  • A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019 Review)
  • Holiday in the Wild (2019 Review)
  • The Knight Before Christmas (2019, Review)
  • A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby (2019)
  • The Greatest Showman (2017)

So look, if I was going to pick a holiday film as standout for this week, it would be The Knight Before Christmas because that one is a ton of fun. However, no Netflix/holiday movie is going to beat out a musical and The Greatest Showman, albeit its very familiar plot has its unique elements of grand flair that musicals need especially with its cast of unique people and the start of show business and circus and whatnot and it has a great soundtrack.

BINGING

Put Your Head On My Shoulder

  • Put Your Head On My Shoulder (2019 rewatch)
  • The Fall (Season 1, 2013)

Currently binging: Who’s the Murderer 5, The Brightest Star in the Sky (rewatch), The Fall (Season 2)

TV has finally dropped to the backdrop now. The Brightest Star in the Sky is one that I’ve liked a lot earlier this year and it got added to play on Huace channel on YouTube so I’m watching that again now. In the effort to get those outstanding TV binges done,  I’m rewatching some of the shows that I’ve really liked so Put Your Head On My Shoulder got added to Netflix so I rewatched that one and the TV binge is about 80% done so it’ll be coming out soon (although no one really reads it and its more for my writing pleasure).

I’m trying to finish The Fall before it gets taken off Netflix but I don’t quite see myself getting through 10 more episodes before the 14th (or around then that its due to be removed). Right now, I’ve literally only just started Season 2, so we’ll see how far we go as the seasons are short, I’m trying to lump them together into one TV Binge post.

That’s it for What’s Up Week 49!
2019 is coming to a close in only a few weeks!

What’s Up 2019: Week 48

Welcome! Its the next weekly recap of What’s Up. Week 48 lands is in the first day of December already. Its hard to imagine how quick 2019 has gone by. This week was a lot of wrap-up: festivals and podcast prep material. Things need to head into Christmas and winter holidays mode soon.

READING

love potions and other calamities

Currently reading: Love Potions and Other Calamities

Reading in a low right now as festival and the wrap-up consumed most of my time but we will be getting on track next week with more reading time.

PLAYING

Afterparty

  • Afterparty

Currently playing: Rusty Lake Roots

Im anticipation of the upcoming recording for Game Warp, my main focus has been on completing Afterparty. For gamers who have played Oxenfree before, you also know that one playthrough is never enough because they have such a cause and effect choice based storyline that from my research, at least 3 endings to this. So second playthrough is happening for sure, somewhat debating to stream it although I haven’t streamed in a long time (always depends on time).

WATCHING

Freaks

  • Freaks (2019, Review)
  • Lady Bird

Its been a good batch of viewings this week. Its nice to get to the end of the year and have a string of good films. Usually, I just make really bad choices. Freaks was an early screener in anticipation of its digital and bluray/DVD release and a very good scifi film of sorts. On the other hand, Lady Bird is more my type of movie as a dramedy with Soairse Ronan (one of my fave actresses) and the coming of age of her character heading to college on the road of love and friendships.

Blood in the Snow Festival

Z

BLood in the Snow Festival ended in the middle of the week, just when I had a writers block so everything got pushed back for a week in order to wrap everything up. I luckily did go back to watch the last feature film, Z because it ended winning the festival awards for Best Director and Best Feature and I can somewhat agree with it.

BINGING

Nailed It! Holiday

  • When I Grow Up (Season 1, 2019)
  • Lipstick Prince (Season 2, 2019)
  • Nailed it! Holiday (Season 2, 2019)
  • Sugar Rush Christmas (Season 1, 2019)

Currently binging: Who’s the Murderer 5, The Brightest Star in the Sky, Put Your Head on my Shoulder, Viva La Romance (S1, 2, 3)

As I dive into a lot of rewatches because of its landing on Netflix or some other Youtube channel, the variety/reality shows that I’ve been watching all gradually wrapped up its season. Lipstick Prince Season 2 was a short 4 episodes long, which is barely half a season but it seems like they will have a next season from how they ended this season. At the same time, When I Grow Up, which I’ve enjoyed a lot with some famous fathers and their kids going on trips to reconnect and discover different cities and cultures in China with some pretty subpar living conditions to much better ones by the end.

HOWEVER, as touching and funny as those previous ones are, Nailed It! Holiday is always the one that captures me especially this year was very much some great amateur bakers that they chose. Some truly hilarious moments. Just slightly more than Sugar Rush Christmas, even though the latter is more in the whole traditional Christmas festivity. Either way, some fun baking shows both amateur and more professional baking competition Netflix shows that fits well with the season. I’ll have the TV binge for those up soon for the December month line-up!

That’s it for this What’s Up!
Next week’s recap will be more festive, I promise!

What’s Up 2019: Week 47

Tranquil Dreams (49)

Wow! Time is flying! Especially with festival coverage hanging in the air! Another week is done and we’re only 5 weeks away until the year ends. Its crazy to think about that!

This past week has been very heavy on WATCHING and trying to catch up on some gaming, although a lot of straying off path. Let’s check it out!

READING

love potions and other calamities

Currently reading: Love, Potions & Other Calamities

Zero progress in reading this past week! I did try to but it has been a lot of the other things taking over the usual reading time I would have.

PLAYING

Rusty Lake Hotel

  • Cube Escape: Paradox (Review)
  • Rusty Lake Hotel

Currently playing: Afterparty, Rusty Lake Roots

Gaming has been moving forward a little more. I really wanted to wrap up the Cube Escape: Paradox completely before continuing anything else. And I got that done and even managed to take a breather from writing to start and finish Rusty Lake Hotel. It was a playthrough but still so much fun to play. Its a lot more grounded in the puzzles than Cube Escape: Paradox and that is why I prefer it over to Cube Escape: Paradox. With that said, the Rusty Lake world is a fun place to dive into with all its twists and oddities.

WATCHING

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

  • Paradox: A Rusty Lake Film (short, 2018)
  • Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000)

Not a whole lot of normal viewing as expected. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a continuation for recording for Movies and Tea. We still have a few episodes until we get there so I’m not going to say much about it but I definitely appreciate it a lot more this time than the last time I saw it back in the theatres in 2000 when I was much younger.

Blood in the Snow Festival

Majic

  • Funny Frights (Shorts Program, Review)
  • She Never Died (2019, Review)
  • Dead Dicks (2019, Review)
  • Sky So Blue (short 2019, Review)
  • One in Two Place (short 2019, Review)
  • Songs My Mother Taught Me (short 2019, Review)
  • Break In Break Out (short 2019, Review)
  • The Nights Before Christmas (2019)
  • Emerging Screams (Shorts Program, Review)
  • Majic (2019, Review)
  • Hunter’s Moon (2019)
  • Giltrude’s Dwelling (short 2019, Review)
  • EXT (short 2019, Review)
  • The Remnant (short 2019, Review)

Blood in the Snow Festival started a bit iffy for myself but its been a very strong last few movies so far. I wrapped up the week watching two very solid films: Majic and Hunter’s Moon. Both are unique in their own regards. The first with a great script and you can read the review now, so I won’t go too much into it. The second is a unique premise and how it was executed and also had a nice level of fun. I’m a bit behind on the reviews for the Festival but it’ll be done very soon.

BINGING

我们恋爱吧

  • Relation Ship (Season 1, 2019)

Currently binging: When I Grow Up, Viva La Romance (Season 2), Lipstick Prince (Season 2), Chase Me, Nailed It! Holiday (Season 2), Who’s the Murderer (Season 5)

I’ve started a lot of things that are ongoing or just finished but as the festival is taking up a lot of time, I just haven’t had as much time to catch up. Relation Ship actually wrapped up its first season of the reality show. While I have a few critics on the structure of it all and the feasibility, they did manage to give it a pretty fun time while feeling rather genuine. I’m ready to put together a huge post on this type of shows for fun. Its been in the planning for a while but decided for this to finish before discussing it.

That’s it for what’s up with me!
