Book Review: Lifel1k3 (Lifelike #1) by Jay Kristoff

Lifelike

On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap. Eve isn’t looking for secrets—she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she’s just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she’s discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it. But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity’s greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past. Even if those secrets were better off staying buried. – Goodreads

Post-apocalypse, YA, Androids: it seems like a rising theme in the next phase of science-fiction fantasy novels. Its not a bad thing to say the least. After the success of The Illuminae Trilogy, its hard to not give some regard to what comes up next for the two authors. While I have yet to look into Amie Kaufman’s solo novels, I’ve been stocking up on Jay Kristoff’s (coming soon is reading Nevernight). Since I’ve been on this sci-fi roll, I decided to give Lifelike a go, the first novel in a currently ongoing series where the second book has been released recently.

While the end game of the story, the twist and such wasn’t exactly hard to figure out, what works a lot here is the execution of the story. Lifelike introduces its characters very well. It also keeps a decent limit to how many characters are in focus while being able to make sure that all the characters serve their purpose in their existence in the story itself. The world itself gives it a lot more to think about because the main girls are Eve and her best friend Lemon Fresh who end up with their robot dog of sorts Cricket while finding a lifelike android which is referred as the almost-boy Ezekiel who starts waking up the memory of Eve throughout their journey to save Eve’s grandfather from the evil androids. There are relationships and conflicts and dilemmas as more secrets get dug up and remembered. Lemon and Eve’s friendship/sisterhood doesn’t get enough depth, but builds a general foundation, while Eve and Ezekiel end up having a lot of the drama involved.

While there isn’t anything particularly issues with the story, its a pity that the world doesn’t have more focus (although I’m sure as the story moves along in the sequels that it will). The future and the technology and the android lifelikes and such in this mass world feels very intriguing to discover and yet, its more focused on the people in the story than using it to build up. While I can’t say that I liked Lifelike quite as much as say the entirety of the Illuminae Files, even at its lowest point (which was very rare because that trilogy ranks very high on my favorites), Lifel1k3 as the first book does a good build for the foundation and has a decent reveal in establishing its characters. While there is some drag at a little part, it does do itself justice in the big finale and reveal.

Goodreads Score: 4/5

What’s Up Week 27: Slowing Down

As the coverage season (at least for me) approaches, things are slowing down mostly because time becomes less and its the process to just not burn out on certain types of writing before getting to the main thing.

Currently reading: The Serpent-Bearer and the Prince of Stars

Its been a long time but I finally wrapped up Lifelike (and got a mild sunburn in the process). I have some pros and cons to Lifelike for sure. Putting obvious fatigue and and being preoccupied with other things aside, Lifelike did take me a little while to get into so I have some issues with it but at the same time, its a good comparison for Jay Kristoff as a solo author writing sci-fi and his ideas while comparing them to when he teams up and co-wrote the Illuminae Trilogy. That review is coming up soon-ish.

PLAYING

Seeing as it was an event coverage weekend, gaming was not really that much at home. Instead, I did try out a few games at Montreal Comiccon. You can find the recap of the Indie Game Zone HERE. Below are some games that we had a chance to try out:

I linked up the Steam pages in case you ever are interested and wanted to check it out!

Other than that, its been pretty much the same as I’ve been on the move mostly so playing mostly mobile games:

  • PinOut
  • Two Dots

I’m going to be honest that I don’t think gaming is going to be too vibrant. But I have skipped two mobile games roundups for Game Warp so the hope is to get one of those up by the end of July as I have been playing a lot of mobile games.

WATCHING

the virgin suicides

  • Lick the Star (short)
  • The Virgin Suicides

Movies and Tea is still in its After Hours episodes with only one of three episodes released. Due to my busy schedule, Elwood and I had decided to get the first episode Season 3 recorded to just get things started. Our next author, in case you don’t follow the Movies and Tea Facebook page, is Sofia Coppola. We chose her for multiple reasons. One of them being that her movies are more dramatic which definitely is a change from Paul W.S. Anderson and Guillermo Del Toro. We kick off with The Virgin Suicides, which I had seen only a few years ago but I don’t think I reviewed because I couldn’t quite grasp how I felt about it overall. This time though, I tried really hard to make sense of it all and notice the little things. I’m not going to talk too much about it as you can hear it all on the upcoming episode.

BINGING

Stranger Things S3

  • Umbrella Academy (Season 1, 2019)
  • Stranger Things (Season 3, 2019)

Currently binging: Love Signal, River Flows To You, “My Highness” The Class Monitor

Back to some Netflix TV binging for us this past week as the husband was on his vacation (well, staycation). I wanted to check out The Umbrella Academy for the Montreal Comiccon and wrapped that up during the beginning of the week. Maybe on Canada Day. Then the husband got really excited about Stranger Things Season 3 launching on Thursday and started that up right away so despite media coverage season, I still found some energy to watch it and I think, we binged it over evenings. I’m prioritizing the TV binge for Stranger Things and Umbrella Academy so it should come out over this month some time. Its already in the works.

As for the currently binging stuff, My Highness should end next week whereas River Flows To You and Love Signal is still in early stages. For the moment, I’m not starting anything new until after July. At thats the plan…but you never know with a new season for Queer Eye, Sugar Rush and Orange is the New Black coming up in July, its going to be hard to resist.

That’s it for this week’s Whats Up!

What’s Up – Week 26: Halfway through 2019

We’re halfway through 2019. Man, time just flies by. We’re in a bit of a mixed bag now. I would love to recap the first half of 2019. At the current stage, I’m quite behind in the Goodreads challenge and my favorite book of the year so far has to be Obsidio. In terms of games, its been quite slow in the reviewing and not so much the playing lately but my favorite game so far is

At about 90% done, this past week was a lot of fatigue at work and such that it was less time reading and more time just napping when I got a chance. Lifelike is a decent story. I have a few issues with it that I’ll talk about it in the book review which should be coming up. A little backlog going on right now, which is good, since I need it to break up some of the upcoming film review heavy month.

PLAYING

  • Geometry Dash
  • PinOut

Going back to some older games that I was playing before this week. Some people find Geometry Dash frustrating or raging but I actually find it rather relaxing to play. Maybe its the music or the simplicity of the game mechanics and the complete focus you need to complete the task. At the same time, PinOut has been downloaded again onto my phone for a little pinball fun.

WATCHING

Tau

  • Tau
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Movies are still a bit light but I’m okay with that because you don’t even want to see what my Fantasia Festival list looks like right now. It was at a shocking high amount which I had to cut down for time and sanity purposes (as well as sleeping and working needs). However, the two movies that I chose to watch this week were pretty good. I know Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is not exactly a masterpiece but I’ve always had fun watching these films. The humor works for me. Its really the highlight through probably goes to Tau, which seems like Netflix is getting a decent sci-fi run on its Originals seeing as the last film I saw, I Am Mother was also quite decent. There are some little issues but overall, its not bad. Review for this one coming up in the next double feature. Side note, I still have two films to wrap up the 26 films for the Netflix “alphabet” but I didn’t get around to watching the movies so we just work with what we have at the moment.

BINGING

love timing

  • Love Timing (Season 1, 2019)

Currently  binging: “Your Highness” Class Monitor, Heart Signal (Season 2), Umbrella Academy

Love Timing finally ended and so far, I have to admit that this version of the whole social matchmaking concept works the best out of the three that I’ve seen. I’ve noticed there is one more version of it on the Zhejiang TV channel. I’ll line that up for later viewing probably. Putting that aside, I am the most invested in this series maybe because both the observing commentators (whatever you call them) were quite natural and fun while still having some little info here and there. At the same time, the way the linking part works also was the most fun to do and the real people involved was also a good span of both personalities and had a nice dynamic that you can see change over the course of the time they spent at the house.

On the currently binging end, things have slowed down quite a bit. I’m still watching Your Highness Class Monitor which honestly is getting slightly disappointing. Heart Signal Season 2 is just one episode a week and its at their 2nd episode so things are still just opening up but I’m not too invested just yet as compared to the first season. While the husband and I did start up Umbrella Academy on Netflix and am half way through the season. Its good because Umbrella Academy has a panel at Montreal Comiccon and I’m looking forward to finishing it before then.

That’s it for this What’s Up!
A little bit old and a little of catching up and a little bit of new.
It seems like a  nice place to be at half of the year.

What’s Up – Week 25!

Week 25 is here! 2019 is going by so far that summer has landed which also brought along a busy busy weekend. I’ll talk more about the busy bit in the weekly adventures coming at the end of June. With everything going on, suffice to say that I just didn’t have quite the energy to get a ton of stuff done on the relaxing front. However, we did also have a long weekend so it had some perks. 🙂

READING

Lifelike

Currently reading: Lifelike

Things are getting exciting for Lifelike as I am nearing the third-quarter of the book. Its been a tiring week so I haven’t had quite the focus or energy to read but the book is definitely picking up. I am starting to have some solid thoughts on how I feel about it. Now to see how it wraps everything up. At the same time, I think its a good starting point to read Jay Kristoff especially since we can see a comparison of how Jay Kristoff writes individually compared to co-writing The Illuminae Files Trilogy since both are science fiction.

PLAYING

fe

Currently playing: Fe

Fe has been a game that I’ve been looking forward to play since it was announced a year or two ago. While its always been slightly fuzzy about what the gameplay actually is, it just looks so cute. This week, I finally sat down to start it up. While the whole open world adventure game isn’t exactly my usual gaming preference, it has a lot of really nice elements so far. Plus, it remembers to turn things around as the enemies now have shown up at where I’m at in the game. I’m still a tad too early to really talk about how I feel about the game as a whole but its still pretty enjoyable, just as long as I get myself oriented in the open world map. 😉

WATCHING

homefront

  • Homefront

Only one movie watched this week. To be fair, I actually did rewatch Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong because its just my routine to watch it more than once but it was more as background noise so I didn’t bother to add it to the list again. Homefront has been sitting on my Netflix list for a while and the husband’s been doing the weekend movie night picks lately and he was in the mood for some Jason Statham action. Suffice to say, this one was less action which I feel might have been slightly disappointing and it was a little more slow-paced. However, the movie was alright. It had some frustrating parts and some of it was rather predictable but it was still pretty good because of its cast. I’ll have the double feature going up for this one soon-ish…

BINGING

Great Escape

  • Great Escape (Season 1, 2019)
  • Heart Signal (Season 1, 2018)

Currently binging: “Your Highness” Class Monitor, Love Timing, Idol Producer (Season 2)

TV binging is definitely going down a little this past week. Great Escape wrapped up and that was a fun episode as it confirmed the season 2 and got this cast to fight for the privilege of having their entire crew back for season 2 (which they did win) so I’m pretty excited for that. These types of shows are on an annual basis so it returns sometime in 2020. It was a fun 6 locations, story-based escape room game that was a ton of fun because of what each of these people brought to the table. Its a nice dynamic and I truly hope they all end up coming back for Season 2 or at least they can schedule it into their busy life. I also started up Heart Signal, the first season which is where (I believe) these social dating shows started up before Dream Space and Love Timing did because Heart Signal just started its Season 2. Sadly, Heart Signal season 1 only had half of its season fully on Youtube on their Tencent channel however I found a ton of snippets and pieced the rest of it together. However, I’m doing something a little different for this so I might finish Season 2 and release that post afterwards. On that note, I haven’t started Heart Signal Season 2 yet because Love Timing ends in one episode and I don’t want to start too many so that I don’t get too confused with the people involved.

That’s it for What’s Up!
I’ll be sharing a lot of news in My Weekly Adventures which should explain the lack of stuff this time..
as well as some upcoming things confirmed now for July.

What’s Up – Week 24 (Somewhat) Back to Normal

What's Up

As we reach almost the halfway point of 2019, things are starting to come together again. Its going to be short-lived because July could possibly be super busy again. However, for now, there’s a little bit of everything this week.

READING

Lifelike

Currently reading: Lifelike

As I reach the halfway point of Lifelike, I’m starting to have a better idea of the story and its decent, especially in terms of the ideas and creativity. I’m still not too sure on how I’m feeling about the whole thing just yet. It has a good few action sequences but then some bits have some pacing issues in the first half.

PLAYING

Cris Tales

  • Cris Tales (Demo)

E3 has wrapped up and while there wasn’t a whole lot of demos to check out online in the aftermath, Cris Tales was a game that caught my eye at the PC Gaming Show and offered a debut demo on Steam which I got to check out. Its definitely one that I’m looking forward to even more after playing the demo. There full voice over for the characters for the dialogue, the combat system is pretty cool plus the animation is gorgeous.

WATCHING

the perfect storm

  • Tracers
  • Ultraviolet (2006)
  • The Perfect Storm (rewatch)

I have to admit that I’m going through a bit of a slump in the movie reviews department lately. It might have to do with all the lackluster movies I’ve been watching. While things are looking slightly better this week, I had hoped to get more movies done. But things should change soon, seeing as TV series are slowing down a little (unless I find something else to get obsessed over). My choice for this one has to go to the rewatch selection of The Perfect Storm which I watched for the upcoming Remembering James Horner Blogathon over at Film Music Central. However, aside from some below par acting, Tracers actually wasn’t as bad as I had thought it might be.

BINGING

le coup de foudre

  • Le Coup de Foudre (2019)

Currently binging: Love Timing, Accidentally in Love (rewatch), Your Highness My Class Monitor, Great Escape

Probably currently ranking the top favorite Chinese drama I’ve seen in the past year, Le Coup de Foudre is one that I’m excited to talk about because its written so well and the characters are also done really well and tone is also balanced. This is one TV binge that I’m looking forward to do. Of course, I’m also doing some rewatching of Accidentally in Love. Great Escape is coming to an end soon, as it only has one wrap-up episode left and Love Timing has 2 episodes left so I’m almost out of variety shows also. Its a good thing because as festival season starts in July, I don’t want any distractions anyways. Although, the plan now during the hopefully quieter season is to finish up those series that I started but didn’t finish (Flipped, Mr. Swimmer, All Out of Love and Behind the Scenes).

That’s it for this What’s Up!
