Book Review: Justice For Belle by Didi Oviatt

Justice For Belle

Ahnia has a very dicey past – one that is scratching under the surface, just dying to get out.

She’s hit rock bottom, broke and desperate to be on top again. When she finds herself partnering up with man she hardly knows, and who’s utterly untouchable, she’s forced out of her comfort zone and left to question her own sanity.

Will Ahnia and Mac’s dangerous decision be a success, or will she find herself in the clutches of an unforgiving force, brought about by her childhood sin?

In this nail biting thrill ride, no one is as they seem… and no one is truly safe with those they trust. – Goodreads

Justice For Belle is a psychological thriller novella. Novellas are a great way to build take a relatively simple story and give it a great pacing and execution as is the case with Didi Oviatt’s latest release. Justice For Belle doesn’t thrive on a lot of characters. In fact, it is more of a character study of our main character Ahnia who has a fascination with death. Not particularly her death but envisioning how others can be murderers and how they would commit their murders unique to them. This gives Ahnia a special angle right from the start and makes it intriguing to see how she has become this way and what secrets she hides in her past that has caused her to have this fascination, especially after seeing that she is a one hit wonder writer who thrived on a past personal experience. It gives Ahnia depth as the story lets us learn more and more about her. Opposite of her is Mac, who she meets randomly and has this attractive quality that makes Ahnia drawn to him. He is fairly spontaneous and being as the novel angles behind Ahnia, Mac becomes even more mysterious especially when there is a few mysteries that come out like the similarity of his fiancee’s appearance to Ahnia or his similar psychological fascination and of course, he goes one step further to create another adrenaline rush scenario that will hopefully trigger both him and Ahnia’s creative juices to write another book. Its an absurd and dangerous idea to say the least and it makes Mac feel even more mysterious than Ahnia is and the extent of how their plans will play out. Both of these characters are very strong and have a great deal of depth of them which makes them the more intriguing to see how their story unravels.

There’s always a risk in novels who want to dive into the more romantic thriller side and that is generally how Ahnia and Mac’s relationship seems to have that forbidden love element to it and a certain level of danger that attracts them both to each other. It is really in these moments that don’t quite work for me and feel somewhat unnecessary. Its starting to feel like attraction is a hard element to put into stories and they are very subjective because different writing will work better (or worse) than others. In this case, the general writing style works however, when it goes into the more intense moments once or twice, it feels a bit overwritten.

Overall, Justice For Belle is pretty good. It has a decent execution and stay well-paced. There are a lot of questions and mysteries bundled together in this psychological thriller that all gets cleared up by the end. The two characters are created with a good deal of depth and layers as they unravel throughout the story as well. It stays pretty much intriguing. While there are little bits of writing in terms of the story development for the relationship between Ahnia and Mac, everything else does work too create enough suspense.

Goodreads: 3/5 (I’d give it 3.5/5 to be more accurate)

What’s Up Week 19

Another week and things are pretty much back on track. Some new things, some currently ongoing and some things finally wrapped up! Its a fun little bit of stuff here and there which is always good.

READING

Justice For Belle

  • Justice For Belle by Didi Oviatt

Currently reading: Crossline by Russ Colchamiro

Working on some ARCs and upcoming blog tour things in the reading department. Justice For Belle releases soon (May 15th) and the review is going up shortly after that time as I wrapped up the novel last week

PLAYING

danganronpa trigger happy havoc

Currently playing: Danganronpa Happy Trigger Havoc

A serious lack in gaming this week but I’m set on working further on Danganronpa while at the same time, I’m trying out some new mobile games for the next mobile games roundup as usual.

WATCHING

Deep Blue Sea

  • The Shape of Water – rewatch (review)
  • Deep Blue Sea

A week of rewatches specifically all for Movies and Tea preparation for recordings! The Shape of Water is the final film in our Guillermo Del Toro season two journey and then we head into our first after hours episode with our shark week selection. As usual, we have three after hours episodes upcoming after The Shape of Water is released. I won’t say too much about it.

BINGING

  • The Brightest Star in the Sky (2019)
  • Idol Producer (Season 1, 2018)

Currently binging: Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Le Coup de Foudre, Dream Space, Produce Camp 2019, Flipped

Finally wrapped up Idol Producer from 2018 which was last year’s season that sparked Nine Percent and a bunch of other entertainment company’s also introduced their own boy groups after their artists have more popularity from this show. I realized that the Idol Producer for this year had actually ended just in April or something so I’ll be checking that out once I’m done with Produce Camp 2019. I realize that I can’t watch two at the time or else I mix up the contestants. As for The Brightest Star in the Sky, that finished up with 2 episodes dropping into the following week and its a really great show. I think that the ending kind of jumped a bit quick to wrap things up in terms of the natural progression of things but it still has its priorities in its plot. I’ll talk more once I get the TV binge done. Just toss it into the backlog pile ;).

Most of the shows I’m watching right now is currently updated every week. Put Your Head On My Shoulder is in its final week or two. Le Coup de Foudre stars the very fun to watch Janice Wu and is also a relatively short series at about short of its halfway point, I think. Produce Camp 2019 is going on at a weekly basis and I do participate on the Weibo voting when I catch it before the time zone difference cut off time. In my mind, there’s slowly a good idea of what the 11 members of this group might be although, the participants keep improving and having different shining points. While Dream Space is supposed to be preparing for its 2nd season but I’m still watching the first one where its a somewhat social matchmaking sort of show but very different from what I’ve seen from the US or Canada and while I don’t review a lot of these shows, I think I might actually talk about it in a TV binge once I finish.

That’s it for this week’s What’s Up!

What’s Up Week 18: Currently Ongoing Update

Welcome to Week 18 of What’s Up! We’re back on track now and things are slowly rolling back into action. Its mostly currently ongoing things but at least something is happening rather than nothing. It sounds a bit pathetic when I look at it but the energy levels are back to normal by the end of the week and its time to get more movies watched (and reviewed) and some more games as well.

READING

Justice For Belle

Currently reading: Justice For Belle

I’m currently reading Justice For Belle. I mean, I’m literally only 10% into it so I have the absolutely basics and set up of the story right now. However, this is an ARC so…it goes live on May 15th which should be around the time that I get the review up, maybe on the 16th. It gives me some time to finish reading and form my thoughts. I need to pick up my pace in terms of reading as I’m falling behind on the Goodreads Challenge.

PLAYING

danganronpa trigger happy havoc

Currently playing: Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc

I’ve been meaning to start Danganronpa for a while and finally dived in at the end of the week. I literally just finished the prologue and decided that I’m not playing this one with the husband because if thats the case, I have to read it out and its a lot of reading as its very much a visual novel with some mystery twist, I think. Anyways, this one is set for a long haul as I believe it clocks in at about 30 hours so not doing the recording for it either because its going to be too long.

WATCHING

the silence

  • The Silence

There is this new wave of movies that target your senses and the latest horror Netflix Original, The Silence is all about being quiet again just like A Quiet Place. I have a few issues with The Silence so its going to be interesting to write up that review. Overall, lets just say, it starts off good and spirals downwards real fast. Not the way you want your horror movie experience to be. Sad, because I really love Stanley Tucci and he gets this leading role and its for this lackluster horror film.

BINGING

  • Z Nation (Season 1)

Currently binging: The Brightest Star in the Sky, Put Your Head on My Shoulder, Idol Producer, Produce Camp 2019, Flipped, You vs Wild, Brave New World, Escape Room, Z Nation

I’m enjoying everything that I’m currently binging but as The Brightest Star in the Sky comes to a close with 2 more episodes falling into the next week, its at the point where I’m having very deep feelings and love for this series. At the same time, Idol Producer is an older series so I ended up trying to be more on track with the current Produce Camp 2019 since I have some trainees in there that I’m really interested in giving some support for. At the same time because of Produce Camp 2019, I ended up pushing forward watching Flipped because of Kido Gao. I got back into watch Brave New World, a variety show and Escape Room as well is catching up as well. Z Nation is still the show I watch with my husband and we finished Season 1 and went right into Season 2. As for my pick right now is trying out You vs. Wild, an interactive Netflix series which I’m doing one episode per day and so far, its been quite fun. I’m liking it more than Black Mirror: Bandersnatch which I only tried for 10 minutes and stopped.

That’s it for this What’s Up!
