Music Obsessions – December 2022

A little late for this month’s Music Obsessions! Hard to imagine we are at the last one of this year. While I already got my Spotify Wrapped, I decided to do that with my final year round-up at the end of this month and do a little runthrough for January. Either way, there are still some good music that I’ve discovered or re-discovered.

恐懼蠶食心靈 Fear Eats The Soul – 鄭欣宜 Joyce Cheng

Joyce Cheng has really improved in her singing. While I’m not exactly a fan of all her music, I’ve been following her music more and more. Not only are her music videos done really well but the music itself from her voice and the emotions are all there. It really helps carry the song. This song and the way she sings it is quite a good match. Its nice to see that she’s able to embrace a lot of different music styles since I’ve shared probably three of her songs in Music Obsessions and each one has been different from the other.

比莉卡厲害 Billie is Incredible – Billie

A rough idea of what the song probably would be in English. I’m not quite sure the exact translation. This song is the main theme from Netflix Taiwanese series Mom Don’t Do That that aired a few months ago. The series itself is fantastic and I will be talking more about in an upcoming project that I will launch at the beginning of 2023. I’m in preparation mode as of the beginning of November and working hard to get things ready for January launch. Either way, this song is simply a lot of fun. The series is a ton of fun as well. Its happy and upbeat and that’s why its here.

烏梅子醬 The Dark Plum Sauce – 李榮浩 Ronghao Li

I honestly don’t listen to enough of Ronghao Li’s music. He writes some pretty great songs and none of that I’ve ever discovered have been bad. Its all pretty great ballads. This one actually feels a little bit of early Jay Chou from the music video to the rhythm itself. Its something that I’m rather nostalgic about since that was part of my teen years when music was the main emotional support. This song’s lyrics are also super sweet much like its title.

好想約你 – Gigi 炎明熹

This year’s new addition to my list of new artists that I think are pretty good is Gigi who was Hong Kong TVB’s Star Academy Season 1 winner. Its pretty nice to see there’s still some talent since most of the time when I listen to any new artists from Hong Kong shows, its all very disappointing. This song is pretty fun and cute and matches her age. Her voice reminds me really good female singers in the 90s which seems like its lost nowadays. Either way, the youthfulness of the song makes it so feel good.

藍奕邦 Pong Nan – Happy Prince 快樂王子

I wish that there was a better video for this song but I don’t talk about Pong Nan enough since from the beginning when he was making music, I loved a lot of his work. Most of his song’s lyrics are meaningful and thoughtful. It has this nice touch of intricacy that I’m a big fan of since it feels like its a rarity. As I was researching for this post, I learned that this song was actually the main theme song for a play.

Bonus: 我比从前更寂寞 I’m Lonelier Than Before – 陈慧娴 Priscilla Chan & 杨坤 Yang Kun
(Singing With Legends S4 Performance)

I’ve shared this song in a previous Music Obsessions (probably a few years ago) which is a pretty popular song of Yang Kun’s which he wrote during his depression and talks about the feeling of depression. Its a song that paired up with his distinctive voice is amazing. Truly heartfelt and deep. This time for the Singing With Legends show, he pairs up with Priscilla Chan to sing it together and it speaks volumes in a different way. Thinking about it, it sure is time to do a post for Priscilla Chan’s music (if I remember to do it next year).

That’s it for this Music Obsessions!

Music Obsessions – April 2022

Welcome to this month’s Music Obsessions! Nothing like some music to soothe the mood. Especially as I’m drafting this up and there’s quite a bit of stuff to plan out. There are some new releases this month that has been rather fun.

豐乳肥臀 BBBB: Big Boobs Bubble Butt – 鄭欣宜 Joyce Cheng

I’ve been following Joyce Cheng on Instagram the past year or so. She has truly broken away her parents’ shadow and proved not only that she is talented in the singing business but also her confidence about her body in general especially since being larger size is such looked down upon in the Asian society (at least from my own experiences). I still remember when her biggest news years ago when she went through some intense diet regime which was published as a book. But now, she is promotes self-respect, self-love and self-confidence. This video itself is a lot of fun as well plus she does show off her really good vocals. I’ve shared some of her music before as well and she’s also been releasing some good singles. Looking forward to see what else she releases.

Blow – Jackson Wang

Jackson Wang is really made some fantastic music lately. I do enjoy that he’s branched away from the hip hop music. I think he is a really great rapper and has some nice singles but this new path in his last few releases is truly so much fun. His latest song, Blow’s music video almost has that musical and theatrical element that makes it pretty entertaining to watch but the song itself is so upbeat.

香水 Perfume – MAYDAY 五月天

It seems like a great time to share the latest video from Mayday, a Taiwanese band that I’ve probably shared before (but I’ve done so many of these that I can’t remember anymore). Mayday celebrated their 25th anniversary which is a fantastic milestone considering this band hasn’t changed its members for the all these years and always deliver quality music. There’s so many songs to share in their discography.

Monica – 張國榮 Leslie Cheung

Its hard to resist sharing Leslie Cheung at the beginning of April as his passing is so close to my own birthday that I always remember this Hong Kong superstar when April 1st comes around to listen to some of his music. Thinking about it, March would have been a great time to do a Leslie Cheung movie marathon. Either way, Monica is probably the first song that I loved from his because it was so upbeat mostly because I listened to this when I was a kid and not exactly caring too much about anything other than the music but it still holds a special part in my heart. Not to mention the corny dance moves but its one that makes this song so fun and hard to resist doing it when you hear it.

明星 – 張國榮 Leslie Cheung

I’m not sure if its a coincidence but when we look back at Hong Kong superstars, they are always scared to lose what they’ve achieved and their talent. They want to be remembered and that’s exactly what Leslie Cheung’s song is which is a little bittersweet as its about a star that’s left and being remembered. I think its suitable song to listen to during this time that truly captures how much his fans still miss him a lot because he was a one of a kind talent.

That’s it for this Music Obsessions!

Music Obsessions – October 2020

Welcome to the next Music Obsessions! Its been quite a good month with some nice music that popped up on my radar. Maybe slightly less selection than previous months but there’s some decent choices here.

Enjoy!

You Are My Hero (“Chasing Dream 我的拳王男友” Main Theme) 你是我的英雄 – 刘艾立 Erika

Johnnie To is a director of a wide range of movie genres although probably he is most known for his action films. Chasing Dream (review) was something of a hidden gem for this year’s Fantasia Festival and I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected. The main theme is pretty awesome.

Pretty Please – Jackson Wang & Galantis

Jackson Wang’s music this year has been fantastic. Starting with a killer hit with “100 Ways” and then using the same actress to create this video with some great vibes and rhythm of chasing a girl down the street. Its giving some strong vibes of Ne-yo’s video “One in a Million”, right? Either way, its super feel good. I do like this new direction that he’s been choosing for his music instead of the pure rap music. I like this style of Jackson Wang more than the bad-ass Jackson Wang a little more. Granted, I do think Papillon is a pretty cool song in general.

I Really Like You – Jerry Yan & Shen Yue
(‘Count Your Lucky Stars’ Ending Theme)

Easily one of my favorite series this year, the main theme for the series is pretty good for Count Your Lucky Stars but I love both Jerry Yan and Shen Yue even if this was a huge gimmick for the Meteor Garden fans (old and new version) but they really do have chemistry even if everyone moaning about the age gap. Back to the music, the ending theme is so cute. Paired up with this video, its just a perfect match and wraps up the really cute vibes from the series.

My Little Night Light 小夜燈 – 鄭欣宜 Joyce Cheng

The latest find for the month has to go to Joyce Cheng’s latest music release. I don’t know if its the fact that I still have a night light or the lyrics itself that seems to really connect with me but this song just tugged at my emotions quite a bit. Its a nice song whether its the melody or the lyrics, its actually quite beautiful.

That’s it for this month’s Music Obsessions!
