What’s Up Week 17 & My Weekly Adventures: Its been a few days and I’m finally back!!

Welcome to the duo segment post of What’s Up and My Weekly Adventures!

Due to the lack of things going on and if you haven’t noticed, my unannounced hiatus for the past 4 days, its been rough and mostly just out of control on the work life personal side of things. I did give a warning last week but things just got more intense. Hence, to save everyone an overload of the same thing, I will do both segments together in this post. Lets start with Whats Up and move onto My Weekly Adventures!

READING

FOREVER PEOPLE

I finished up Forever People just in time for the blog tour so I will keep things brief here so you can see my thoughts over on the review. Overall, its a good story: good premise and compelling characters to say the least.

PLAYING

the vanishing of ethan carter

  • The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

The husband and I finished up The Vanishing of Ethan Carter very soon after we started it. Its a pretty creative indie title with a lot of mystery and nice execution on gameplay and narration. Plus, the game sets itself in a visually stunning backdrop. I’ll be editing the playthrough after last week’s Rime. It’ll take a little while to get things back on track on my end.

WATCHING

NOTHING…absolutely nothing. I can tell you that I’m planning on catching up with all the Marvel movies in the next little while: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp as well as all the other Pixar stuff in case it gets removed from Netflix at some point and get around to rewatching The Shape of Water for the next Movies and Tea episode.

BINGING

  • My Daughter’s Boyfriend (女儿们的男朋友, Season 1)

Currently binging: The Brightest Star in the Sky, Put Your Head on My Shoulder, Z Nation (Season 1), Idol Producer, Rush to the Dead Summer (rewatch)

My Daughter’s Boyfriend is a 6 episode variety show which follows the daughters of 4 different famous fathers (actors and soccer player) and watch how they interact with their boyfriends over a few weeks time as they comment on various aspects on relationship and how their views and their daughters view on marriage, life and everything else changes. These shows usually can get very heartwarming and China has a lot of these variety shows from different angles and in the end, other than watching the relationships here whether its the love life or the father-daughter one, the main thing here is usually opening up the channel of the importance of communication and family and probably talk through some issues that everyone at one point or another might encounter in dealing with these different situations. Its 6 episodes and I thought it was really good. I’m not going to write about this show but it seems to already be greenlit for a second season so I’m looking forward to it.

As for the other shows, I’m pretty much watching the same things. Due to having a lot of overtime at home, I ended up rewatching Rush to the Dead Summer in the background while trying my best to stay on track with my two current favorite shows The Brightest Star in the Sky and Put Your Head on My Shoulder. I’ve been also semi-watching Z Nation with my husband but not completely focus although the show really doesn’t seem to have that much depth in Season 1 yet. The new thing this week is Idol Producer which I went back to watch to see how boy group Nine Percent started because a good few of them is now Nex7 which I think has some potential to do well and is the focus on Master in the House which I didn’t get a chance to catch up with this week but will get back to soon as well as Great Escape and such.

What have you been watching/reading/binging/playing?

Suffice to say not a ton happened so I’m going to keep it short and sweet as its pretty much the upcoming post recaps and such that I’ll be talking about. A few upcoming plans and perhaps some seasonal segment revivials and all that great stuff. The few days off reminded me of how much I miss writing and editing and recording so I have a few things to also deal with and get back on track on all projects.

Restaurant Discovery: Mama Dumplings

Chicken - Mushroom Dumplings

Its been a crazy hunt looking for  a dumpling place not on the island of Montreal or more specifically Chinatown and by complete spontaneity, I drove by one  a week or two ago and since then have gone two times with my friend. I’ll have a post soon about it.

Movies & Tea Podcast: Crimson Peak

If you didn’t see the reblog last week, Movies and Tea has a new podcast episode for Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak. My first time viewing feelings back when it released and this rewatch definitely had some differences.

Easter Weekend

Easter weekend was probably a mistake thinking back now with all the overtime but I think it also charged me up a little. We didn’t really do a ton for Easter weekend and mostly just relaxed and took advantage of the relatively nice weather and took care of some chores like changing tires and you know, taxes. However, my husband and I did go for a little walk in a park and its nice because the park itself has a lot of workout stations so I’m planning out some way to incorporate cardio with these exercises to get into shape. Add some changes here and there and whatnot. Only 7 weeks until my best friend’s wedding and I’m living in constant fear that I won’t fit into the bridesmaids dress at the lack of exercise, especially after this work rush. We are still working out the workout routines and such but the big plan starts in a few days after I’ve recuperated some energy.

REVIEW

Forever People is a futuristic sci-fi cyberpunk adventure where the world lives to accumulate Node Points which helps them get better treatment when they enter the Node after they die. As per the stories from the Founders which created this system. However, when Camille, a bounty hunter with a special gadget  called the Confiner gets hired to catch a rebel before she commits suicide ends up losing out on that mission, things go sideways and a lot of secrets get discovered as a result. There’s a lot of good here. The world building and the futuristic elements from the gadgets to the universe here has a lot of thought put in and a lot of imaginative elements as well. The structure of the story gives Forever People a nice angle as it focuses on various characters and their encounters. Its a bit like how Game of Thrones books is structured (at least the first one since I only read that one) and I might have similar criticisms in the sense that some characters come by very late in the game and then there is an imbalance especially when a lot of these timelines do crossover, which shows a nice storyboard and planning elements in the writing overall but there are some characters that are used very minimal and might not exactly deserve their own narrative chapter. Although, there is a purpose in the whole scheme of things so that isn’t a huge criticism at all.

Since we’re talking about characters, that is a standout element here (aside from the world building). The main character that starts here is Camille and she is tough cracker and in the description, its apparent that she is not your typical femme fatale that Hollywood creates however has her exceptional competence and qualities. At the same time, the other characters here whether its her tech friend Remington or the rebel leader Toy or her liaison Cody and other characters, they manage to tie them together very well and give them proper crossover when necessary, especially with some characters that seem small at the beginning and end up having some part in the whole spectrum of things. The story here is quite standalone but if there was some way to have Camille be in some other story setting, it would be nice to see this character having further adventures.

Overall, Forever People started off a little slow in the setup but turns itself around and remains well-paced throughout. The world building and character, especially its main character Camille being its standout as well as using a good structure to form its point of views and narratives. While there’s this feeling that the world here feels very familiar, I can’t quite pinpoint where its from. However, there is a lot of twists and turns here plus a lot of adventure. Its always nice to see how different people envision a different version of the future and the afterlife.

What’s Up Week 16: When TV is the Best Multitasking Companion…

Tranquil Dreams (28)

Overlapping long weekends are usually a great time to catch up on some work and for myself, it was time to finalize a lot of stuff thats been sitting around so suffice to say that I did get some TV and movies going but a lot of other things as well. Easter weekend is always that tricky time where its busy at work and never certain on what happens in general. However, there is a decent balance here. Although, there is a great tilt towards TV as that is one of the most effortless parts of my life and its always fun to put on in the background.

READING

FOREVER PEOPLE

Currently reading: Forever People

I’m still working on reading Forever People and very close to the ending now. The review will be going up later this week as part of blog tour.

PLAYING

rime

  • Rime

Currently playing: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

We are working on shorter indie games in our backlog these past few weeks. I’m hoping to get a lot of the reviews done afterwards. Rime was a one that I started last year when we got it via Playstation Plus free games. I can’t remember which month but I was really excited about it. Overall, the game is visually beautiful and runs about 3 to 4 hours with a fantastic soundtrack but just a few little technical things that I’ll talk about in the review (at some point when I get it done). The playthrough however should be on the channel next week. Game Warp channel has The Unfinished Swan’s playthrough going up this week, in case you are interested.

WATCHING

holidays

  • Holidays
  • Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

A drop in movies this weekend and it had to do completely with me because I had a bunch of stuff to do and I didn’t want to start a new movie and not be able to focus on it or fall asleep. However, we did finally get around to some more titles on Netflix. I really don’t know which I prefer out of the two though, maybe holidays because the horror anthology had some really fun segments even if some of them were downright weird. But then, it was Easter weekend so Holidays sounded like a suitable choice.

BINGING

  • Go Fridge! (Season 4, 2018)
  • Black Summer (Season 1, 2019)

Currently binging: The Brightest Star in the Sky, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Great Escape, Master in the House, Produce Camp 2019, Z Nation (Season 1)

As with our main title up top, TV is yet again my most focused topic. However, this week I wrapped up two pretty good ones so I’ll talk a little about both of them. Go Fridge is Season 4 which is last year’s season. Its a fun little show where back to back episodes focus on two celebrities and their fridges and the content inside which goes between a talk show in the first part and then a team battle between the two teams of chefs as they make a custom menu based on what they’ve learned during the talk show part and the contents in the guest’s fridge and see which one wins. The second one which we binged in two days is the new Netflix series Black Summer, which essentially is set in the Z Nation universe and set before that show. I know that now because we started watching Z Nation after we wrapped up Black Summer. When I was doing research, it seems there’s a lot of criticism about Black Summer but with exception of some overacting, its a pretty decent show and I’d like to see a Season 2 for it. I’ll go into more details in the upcoming TV binge.

That’s it for this What’s Up!
We’re progressing slowly but work is a constant in my life with extended work hours and overtime so things are going to slow down especially in the next What’s Up.
