TV Binge: Pretty Little Liars (Season 7 Final, 2017)

Pretty Little Liars drew to an end this summer with their seventh and final season which doesn’t only answer who A is but reveals all the mystery behind it. Was the ending all that I hoped for? Let’s see!

Season 6 left us with a cliffhanger of massive proportions. Hanna was kidnapped by the mysterious Uber A and Caleb is guilty because he lost her under his watch. Allison wonders whether she is going crazy as she starts seeing scary people in her life. While romances and other bonds continue. Its hard to see how the show is simmering down to their last season. I’ve always been cautious about the whole moving forward the timeline to them being adults however, Season 6 had its great moments and ending with that cliffhanger was fantastic, mostly because I love Hanna as a character. Her growth (along with the other liars) is one of the largest as she embraces a lot of emotional trauma and have grown to be one of the strongest characters.

Season 7 was kind of an okay send off. I did like it a lot and binged it relatively quickly however, the show remained the strongest when they were in danger or hunting down Uber A. At this point, the relationships are not a whole lot of fun anymore. At times, its somewhat of a wishy washy grind. The characters lose a little of what made us love them back in the earlier seasons and a part of it had to do with them finding their way back to who they were meant to be with. Perhaps it helps please the audience as well. At this point, we have our favorite ships and there is almost no doubt that some way they will get back together. For me, as ridiculous as Caleb suddenly became in Season 7, I still wanted him to be with Hanna because they bring out the best of each other.

Uber A was a cool twist. They managed to piece everything together and it made sense. And the things the girls had to go through were crazy especially with the introduction of the electric board. It helped craft the characters a little more and what they wanted in their end game. At the same time, its always a nice time when they can grab Mona back into the game. Mona has always been a very fun character to watch because she is incredibly smart. You can’t help but start thinking that Hanna does play a big part in this season’s finale since she gets the most crap thrown her way. Although, everyone still doesn’t get out unscathed. Like I mentioned, the danger is what makes Pretty Little Liars so fun to watch. It sounds horrible but its where most of the exciting and tense moments are.

Another good bit is that Season 7 brought back a lot of familiar faces and its always nice to see where everyone is after the fast forward 5 years in Season 6. My favorite is no doubt seeing Jason diLaurentis (played by Drew van Acker) back for a few episodes and I just love him with Aria. Ezra and her are just so painful to watch because we rarely see them out of any dilemma. Its nice to have Luke come back as well for a few episodes among the many faces here. Its truly a reunion to give everyone a wrap-up of their futures.

[****SPOILER***]However, the downfall of the series was the final part as they try really hard to make it seem like that Rosewood always has its victims or something as we see mini versions of the Pretty Little Liars, dressed almost like they were in Season 1 when all this started go through the same thing. Its a little ridiculous in my book. They could have just wrapped this up with these girls we grown to love and them finally getting out of this mess because they finally figured it all out and have some kind of resolution. [***End of Spoiler***]

Overall, Pretty Little Liars is a great show. I love it a ton and actually plan on rewatching it to get the TV binge of the first few seasons written up here. Its amazing to see a teen series pack in the dark and creepy mystery thriller vibe so well and manage to keep it going over seven seasons. Its definitely not all perfect. There are some moments that were a little stupid and some that were ridiculous but for the most part, its just twists and turns all over the place and ones that you barely will see coming because you really need to see all the teeny tiny details, maybe… Awesome show! 🙂
