Netflix A-Z Double Feature: Dollhouse (2012) & Dark Skies (2013)

A double feature for letter D seems to be so fitting! Maybe not but coincidentally, right before I started this segment I had seen this Irish drama I’ll be looking at briefly called Dollhouse.  Adding on to my original choice of Dark Skies, we’re in for a little contrast of movies here where the only two things in common are that they are movies starting with D and that the director is also the writer.

Let’s check them out!

Dollhouse (2012)

dollhouse

Director/writer: Kirsten Sheridan

Cast: Seana Kerslake, Johnny Ward, Kate Stanley Brennan, Shane Curry, Ciaran McCabe, Jack Reynor

A group of street teens from Dublin’s inner city break into a house in an upper class suburb. The break-in quickly moves into a night of frenzy, scandal and consequence.-IMDB

I’m not going to spend too much time on this one.  Dollhouse has a good idea.  It does.  It pulls it together with a relatively better ending. Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself…again.  Dollhouse is empty.  Its a lot of teens just messing around in this fancy house.  They break the stuff, trash the kitchen, mess around inside and outside. Then they sit around and play games.  Eventually you have a reveal fairly soon about what this is all about because the neighbor’s son drops by to see what is going on with the noise and whatnot.  Then there’s more random talking, trashy dialogue and things kind of go full on crazy once they get high and/or drunk.  There is some meaning behind how certain people have better friendship than others and how there’s something hidden nagging at us the whole way.

dollhouse 2012

Although the whole beginning part really doesn’t feel like much the ending does have a reveal that I didn’t see coming.  Its not enough to make me say that its a good movie and it still feels pretty meaningless.  I’m kind of indifferent.  I know its trying to send a message, kind of a coming of age, breaking free and finding out what’s important, maybe.  It is a little sad because at various points it feels like the teens here each have an underlying personality besides their crazy self with their friends and it wants to get deeper into that but then it never fully commits to building on the characters enough for me to care.

Dollhouse is an empty Irish teen drama who doesn’t build enough of its characters but delivers a good final act which unfortunately still doesn’t help the movie feel more meaningful than it probably was intended to.

Dark Skies (2013)

Dark Skies

Director & Writer: Scott Stewart

Cast: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett, L.J. Benet, J.K. Simmons

As the Barret family’s peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them.-IMDB

Sci-fi horror featuring alien invasion sort of angles have been tough for me. I mean, I love the Alien series.  But, thinking about it now, I haven’t been a fan of anything specific.  The first comes to mind is Signs and I didn’t enjoy that one much.  Let’s just say that I was a little nervous going into Dark Skies.  I didn’t know what the story was about but all I knew was that there are aliens and they are invading this family.  That’s it.  But sometimes, its best to go in blind.  Dark Skies had some super creepy screenshots on Netflix and it had me wondering whether I’d be able to handle it.  As it turns out, Dark Skies is a pretty effective horror featuring alien invasion sort of plotline.  I don’t want to ruin the movie so I’m going to keep this as spoiler free as possible.

Dark Skies has an amazing atmosphere.  Its set up effectively to build tension and give you the proper creepy scares.  From the first moment that strange things happen, it already started freaking me out a little.  Then as the plot escalades and we learn more about what is going on, it was just downright scary.  There was one part that was a little weird in the effects department but I quickly overlooked that as the story took an even crazier turn in events.  Although, I have to admit that the twist they put, I had my suspicions already.  Still, it was pretty nice that a movie was able to pull it off in such a clever way.

Dark Skies

Another thing that makes Dark Skies effective is that they focus around a family and particularly kids.  Kids in any horror just make things creepier.  When they are pulled into the equation, it just makes it more personal somehow.  In this one, there were two brothers in this family, the Barrets.  The kids were overall pretty great in this.  They did their roles really well.

As for the parents, played by Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton, there isn’t much to say.  I personally like Keri Russell a lot.  Its the first time I’ve seen her do horror so I wondered how it would turn out.  As the movie started getting tense, I started remembering that Keri Russell’s scary face is also being nervous and tense but it worked out great here and I enjoyed it a lot.  Her mom character really set the story in motion many times and there’s that one seen which made me hold my breath a little.  Josh Hamilton on the other hand, played the skeptical parent and I think his character was meant to be a little frustrating to watch because he wouldn’t see what the mom was seeing.  However, the contrast in itself is what makes these two characters paired up well.

I guess the surprise here is the little part that J.K. Simmons has in this one but its exactly what needs to be.  He is the alien expert and he exists to tell us his theories.  As always, as small a role as it is, it still had its purpose and it worked out great.

Dark Skies

However, as enjoyable as Dark Skies is, it doesn’t come with no flaws.  The main one being in some of the choices these characters make.  At times, you question their logic.  In the midst of everything that was going on, it sometimes felt that they forgot they were trapped in this weird situation with random things happening or that their children or themselves were in danger.  It seemed a little awkward.

Dark Skies is an effective alien sci-fi horror that works on many levels.  I had some issues with effects and some issues with the logic of certain actions executed by the characters.  However, it does a fine job at building tension and the story itself has a lot of substance.  If anything, it built quite a bit of fear in me that I kept the lights on that night.

Have you seen Dollhouse and/or Dark Skies? What did you think of them? Are there any other memorable sci-fi/horror/alien invasion movies I should check out?

Any guesses on the selection for E? Think Bollywood! 😉
(I thought about changing it but I’m committing to my original choice)

Acrostic Name Game

Alex Raphael runs a fantastic blog that you can check out HERE! I haven’t gotten around to do the Alphabet Movie Meme that inspired him to do this little Acrostic Name Game but I had to do this one ASAP.  He’s been an awesome guy who has been dropping  lots of awards that being the ridiculous person I am, I’ve fallen WAY behind on responding.  Seeing as its all those #FF going around, I figured I’d give him a nice shoutout.  He did his on TV shows.  I’m going to do mine on TV and for those that I can’t figure out a show, I chose a movie.  A little mish mash 😉

True Blood

true blood poster

Honorable mention for this would’ve been Top Gear (UK)! I like True Blood a lot. I mean, I binge watched Season 1, suffered through Season 2 and fell in love with Season 3 & 4 then got really weirded out by Season 6.  Thats the general recap  of how I felt about it.  Wait, is there only five seasons now? Anyways, I’m lost but I love it for the vamps and werewolves and sex and nudity.  All that stuff, you know? Eric Northman is hot and Alcide is so handsome.  Not such a huge fan of Sookie but thats okay, it always works out in the end 😉

Robin Hood (2006)

Robin Hood BBC

I haven’t completely finished Robin Hood.  I’m about a few episodes away.  I love BBC series a lot and this one was pretty fun to watch. Its not just the guy who played Robin Hood but it also introduced to me the very handsome Richard Armitage 🙂 When I first saw him, he looked like Bradley Cooper but with a bit more charm. Honestly, I became aware of him because of Ruth over at FlixChatter.

Aristocats

aristocats poster

The Aristocats is one of my favorite Disney movies.  Its fun and energetic and it features lots of cats.  Everybody does want to be a cat, I tell you.  At least I wanted to be one after this.  Maybe thats why I meow occassionally…*ahem* maybe I shouldn’t have said that.  I just went to another level of weird.

New Girl

new girl poster

I’m slightly behind with New Girl but I have a mega girl crush on Zoey Deschanel.  I have a developing love for Jake Johnson and the whole supporting cast is hilarious.  I love this sitcom to bits.  I really should catch up with this season 🙂

Quill

quill poster

One of first movies that touched me.  When you give you animals and their bond with their owners and base it on their life (and death), that just tears me apart.  Quill is amazing, touching and so memorable.

Under the Dome

I cannot wait for Under the Dome to come back this summer.  Last summer, this one really ruled my world.  It has a fabulous actress Rachel Lefevre and as I saw more of her movies, I saw just how awesome she is.  Plus, the guy in this is pretty cool.  The whole story is intense and mysterious.  I haven’t read anything from  Stephen King so I know nothing of this going in. This show is all sorts of amazing!

I‘ll Follow You Down

i`ll follow you down poster

One of the movies I saw in Montreal’s Fantasia Festival.  I hasn’t been released anywhere else but it has an older Haley Joel Osment, Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell.  Its a sci-fi/time travel mystery.  I was intrigued by it and gave this a chance and it turned out to be surprisingly good.  The concept was very well thought out.  You can check out the review HERE!

Lie to Me

LIE TO ME POSTER

I’m still baffled as to why this show was cancelled because Tim Roth kicks some serious ass as Cal Lightman with his lie detecting skills. There’s a good chemistry between the characters and I love that they add real life snapshots of well-known public figures emphasize their point in the cases that they investigate.  Despite the serious material, they still get in some  humorous moments to loosen the atmosphere.

Dollhouse

dollhouse s1

I only saw this one earlier this year and I ended up buying the two seasons afterwards.  Dollhouse was the first thing that made me acknowledge just how talented Joss Whedon is.  I binge watched this and finished both seasons so fast and I was obsessed with not only Eliza Dushku and Tahmoh Penikett but totally fell in love with Topher played with Fran Kranz.  As much as its about giving people what the clients ask for, it takes a play on the end of the world and the double-edged sword with tampering with God-like technology that manipulates human nature, desires and morals.

Resident Evil

resident evil

Resident Evil and all its movies are my guilty pleasure.  Its simply a fun and entertaining shoot ’em up zombie flick.  I look forward to the new one coming out this year (I think).  Maybe no one anticipates a lot but for me, Alice is my absolute favorite movie character.  I even disguised as her for Halloween two years ago 🙂

Elementary

elementary tv series

I just realized that I have a lot of new series on here.  Anyways, I like Elementary. It came as a surprise to me because I’m not particularly a huge fan of Lucy Liu but I found her really good.  Plus, the whole Sherlock in New York with Watson turning into a woman modernizes this classic.  For me, it works out good 🙂

August Rush

Music has helped me through a whole lot of stuff and August Rush is one of those movies that touched me.  Maybe not a lot of people like it.  I know my boyfriend didn’t.  There’s just something really magical about the whole story and I can relate to it in some ways.  I actually wrote a post about it a good while back and you can check that out HERE.  I just love the music and everything.

Moonlight

Another series that got cancelled after only one season.  I thought it was a really good one also.  One of the better vampire series I’ve seen at least.  It made me fall in love with Alex O’Loughlin also. Its only one season and I actually think its time to revisit it 🙂

Sherlock

sherlock poster

Another Sherlock Holmes modernized version! As much as I like Elementary, there is something about Benedict Cumberbatch that really makes this one stand out and I like the guy who plays Watson also. I need to start Season 3!

Whew!! That was actually kind of hard to put together. I originally wanted to use just TV series but figured that after Q turned out to be super hard and I modified it to part TV and movies.  Not too bad, right?

Now that I’ve done it! Go ahead and make one of your own! It can be any list as long as its with your blog name! I shared the link up top on the instructions that Alex gives.  Be sure to check out his awesome blog and join into this fun game. I’d love to see what you come up with!

This blog was supposed to go up on Friday but I guess somewhere in the world, some place is still Friday, right? I have some exciting stuff to announce over the next while.  First one will be probably over this weekend since I didn’t get something for today.  Remember to check back, ok?

My Newest TV Addiction: Dollhouse

Also, the reason for the lack of movie reviews lately…

It seems that TV series binging has done me no good. Before it was 90210. Now, its Dollhouse….

dollhouse tv

Last week, I decided to start watching Dollhouse. Some of you may know because I posted about it briefly in one of my weekend posts HERE.  I just finished Season 1 and then after some debate, continued on with Season 2 last night. There is only two seasons, so I’ll be done soon enough.

Right now, I’m deciding between praising Joss Whedon and punching him in the face for causing me to dream and think constantly of the show.  The questions revolving in my head especially after that Epitaph Part 1. Apparently, I read that that episode was added on afterwards and only on the DVDs. I don’t know, anyways, Netflix has it as the final episode in Season 1.  Seriously, if you saw Dollhouse and you didn’t see that episode, I’m telling to go check it out because its really amazing.  Adds this amazing story and (extra) meaning to the whole series. There is a lot to think about with the concept of letting technology go too far or playing God.

Dollhouse cast

The Dollhouse itself was already a pretty crazy idea but man, to think what the possibility of a future with some crazy technology is totally out of the world.  I don’t want to go all spoilers just in case you’re in that same boat as me and haven’t seen this.  I know that I’d hate it if someone starts telling me what happens.

As much as the main girl playing Echo is super awesome and kick ass, a good part of the story revolves not only around her but the other “dolls”.  However, as much as the dolls themselves have their own story mostly connected to their past, I think the people running the Dollhouse is what makes this super cool.  This is what makes it so addictive because every character develops in their own way, better or worse.  My absolute favorite is the character of Topher Brink.

Imagine your superior telling you this about the reason you get hired

Adelle[to Topher] The cold reality is that everyone here was chosen because their morals have been compromised in some way. Everyone, except you. You, Topher, were chosen because you had no morals. You have always thought of people as playthings.

Thats pretty harsh.  Topher’s character development is definitely the most interesting to me.  A person with no morals has so much room to grow, right? Anyways, that Epitaph episode really makes you wonder about what happens to him specifically…

I’m sure tons of you recognize him but this guy was in Cabin in the Woods.  Its making want to pull that out to watch soon…maybe I’ll review it after I finish this 🙂

Everyone else has its place and it just fascinates me how Dollhouse story was written so well.  Its hard to find series where everyone has an important part to the turnout of the series.

Maybe I’m overthinking a lot but I just find there’s so much to look forward to in this.

I’m at Season 2 Episode 4.  Now that I’m feeling less guilty about posting much, I’ll head back to watching it 🙂

Hopefully I’ll have a few posts drafted for tomorrow….something a bit more meaningful..
