The 4th comic anthology revolving around Toronto in Toronto Comics is called Osgoode For Gold. If you have read these anthologies before, you already know that while the central focus is set in Toronto, the stories all vary and can be set in fantasy or reality or past, present or future. There are no limits in these stories and yet once again, the creativity and the themes addressed here are truly great to read. They shed light on the people and culture in the city and have stories for everyone. At the same time, the art also changes with each story as well as the color palette. Its what makes them unique.

There are 23 stories while it ends with an additional 4 which are thoughtful one page art. It would be crazy to talk about each of them, however, I will choose a few that I personally like.

They are the following:

• Catnap Cafe: When a newly immigrated girl moves to Toronto, she goes to Catnap Cafe for the experience where she turns into a cat and befriends another cat who guides her back to apartment in hopes of being able to turn back into human. Lets just say, cat cafes and cat related stories are things that I love so this one also had the perk of the whole details and such that I really liked.
• Leave it to Leo: More of a comedic offering in a vibrant colors and art set in 1940s, Leave it to Leo talks about comic book artists who want to be compensated for their worth and play a trick on their editor.
• Mirrored: Nothing like a little imagination of interdimension fantasy, Mirrored tells the story of a subway entrance to another dimension for magical battles with a little twist ending parallel to reality.
• FinalMIX! Difficulty Expert! : Set in Pacific Mall in Markham and structured around a video game dance battle, this story is about as relatable as they get for me.
• Cenotaph: Set in a future Toronto, we look at ghosts who are looking back at the city that was when they were alive and how the destroying and building has changed it in the present.
• The Part-Time Knight: Wrapping up the anthology is this story about a stable kid who hears a dastardly plan to murder the king and finds a way to bring the message as knights would do.

Here are a few that I like and of course, all the stories were pretty great whether it was the different art styles or the time frame they chose to use or the realistic or fantastical angle. It shows off the talent and the stories that any place and experience can inspire. Sometimes they are predictable but the majority times, they aren’t.

Fables, Vol. 2 Animal Farm by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham & Steve Leialoha

Its been almost exactly 2 years since I reviewed Fables Volume 1. Volume 2 takes place a little while after the first volume’s events as Red Rose gets her community service sentence for the previous book’s events to go on a trip with her sister Snow White to the Farm to check on what’s going on there. Its when the revolution happens and Snow White gets caught up in the situation as things go from bad to worse. The story here is a lot of fun. It reminisces a twist on not only further fairy tale characters from Goldilocks and the Three Bears to Three Little Pigs and makes them more vulgar than innocent but also a take on Animal Farm, hence the title of volume 2 with the revolution of the animals to want more and to overturn the Adversary which looms over them. It dives deeper into the Fables world with just this revolution alone.

Retaining much of its art style and story writing, Volume 2 still has a lot of its charm. I can’t say that its quite as fun as the first dive into Volume 1. I can’t quite grasp what felt like it didn’t live up to it. Maybe its because I really like the Bigsby Wolf character and this volume mostly revolved around Snow White. However, to be fair, it gave us a better look at this female protagonist and she is much different from other Snow Whites that has been brought to life in fairy tale spinoffs and movies and TV series. It always fascinates me how these fairy tale characters can have so many faces and how Snow White is always used. Regardless, she is a decent choice. In some ways though, the goal here was to give a backstory on the bond between the sisters, Snow White and Red Rose while also giving a little deeper look at Red Rose.

There’s not a whole lot to say about Volume 2. I still think the best part is the art style and the dialogue and the story that it tells. Pity that The Wolf Among Us Season 2 won’t be happening on video games but at least there’s still more volumes of Fables to read (hopefully) soon, once I get a chance to pick up the next one.

Archie, Vol. 5

Volume 4 ended with quite the bomb as we realize that Betty has lost the feeling in her legs after the accident. A honest tragic turn in events and a particularly darker moment because Betty is one of the nice girl next door characters and while enduring losing her best friend and having that whole breakup situation, she has lost even more now.

Volume 5 takes a dramatic turn of events. Its not so much comedic in this one even if it tries to inject some moments with the Classic Archie screw-ups and Jughead intervening with Betty’s parents at one point with his clever ways. However, at some point it felt like it was meant to go in this direction and that change of pace continuing from the previous volume really helped continue making this even more thrilling because we can see Betty’s strength and also see Betty and Archie face their feelings between them and have to make some choices. In that sense, all the characters are developing and growing with this one big event that happened. Its a heartbreaking experience but also one that sees her parents putting in extra effort to protect her. It also throws everyone’s life off balance but also appreciate the good that we the readers don’t see especially when the characters take up all the work that Betty is involved in Riverdale.

I’ve always been a fan of Betty because she is a beautiful girl next door that kind of never really follows the norm of how girls are and its especially true with this revamped version. As much as I loved the original Archie Comics, I only read a few volumes in the ton that has been released so its hard to be fully aware of how she was. This modernized Archie Comics makes Betty in a character that I love even more so this volume really hit me a hard especially as she struggles to be positive through this situation. Its nice to see the shift in tone as well in these versions which gives a good focus on each of these characters and giving them their own spotlight. I gave this one full points for being brave enough to take these daring paths into darker and more serious territory while giving the characters a lot of room to develop as they go through their different situations as well as bringing forward some of the more supporting characters and giving them their own story highlight as well. I loved this volume a lot!

The fourth volume of the Archie series features the headline-making comic event ‘Over The Edge,’ where the lives of Archie and his friends are forever changed. – Goodreads

The foreword of this volume starts about this book having a pivotal moment that happens. With that said, it seems to be something to look forward. At this point, its already done a lot right. Every volume has crafted these characters that we love but modernized them and given it the graphic novel treatment. The art has been fantastic and each issue also brings out a different story for each of the characters.

Volume 4 is a pretty solid volume. We go through Veronica coming back from boarding school and having to find back her rhythm with Archie in their relationship while still having resistance from her father. Betty tries to move on and starts to have a bond with Dilton. At the same time, Archie and Reggie’s feud gets worse. Archie and Jughead both are really quirky characters and still inject humor but there is a more than usual switch of tone here as we barrel to the ending which gives us a rather heartbreaking moment. The way the story sets up about how each character finds out about the situation is a really clever move. Its gives this life to Riverdale. There is a real change in pace also because there is essentially more drama going on as well. At the same time, the different issues here have focus on a wider range of characters and not just the four main ones like for Dilton for example. Its a nice way to change the angle every once in a while.

Up to this point and building from the first three volumes, it was time to give the story a real push in a new direction for its characters. Something really life-changing and I appreciated every bit of it. It captures a lot of those spontaneous decisions a teenager (or honestly possibly anyone) can make that end up having unexpected consequences outside of your own realm of control. That sets up the stage for some growing up for everyone in Volume 5 and I am looking forward to see how it moves from this ending.

I have Volume 5 so I’ll be jumping into that right away!

Montreal Comiccon 2018 Haul

Welcome to a beautiful Tuesday! After an intense 3 day weekend at the Montreal Comiccon, I finally got all recuperated and caught up with everything, well, mostly. Yay to vacation time!  While I still have a ton of cosplay pictures to go through and event stuff to work on before sharing it tomorrow along with all the coverage links and such which I have over at That Moment In.

So, we’ll start with something light as always. I’m on quite a tight budget lately but I did manage to get a few things over at Montreal Comiccon.

Without further ado, here is the haul!

Books

I’m starting to feel like I buy a lot of books during the year at these Comiccon events. Oddly, its something that I tend to enjoy doing because I get to meet these independent authors. There was quite a few new names there (unless of course, I just didn’t realize they were there last year, which is also highly probable).

Afterdeath – Benoit Chartier

One of those really memorable moments of meeting someone at Montreal Comiccon definitely goes to Benoit Chartier who has an incredible way of sharing a brief summary of his stories. While its easy to sell me on a YA fantasy paranormal novel of sorts like Afterdeath, when he started telling the summary of Red Nexus which is a sci-fi story and that is not exactly my top reading genre, he also got me curious and it sounded like a fun concept also. While I had a hard time deciding, I did ask for a suggestion on which he recommends, a hard decision I know but he ended up suggesting Afterdeath. There’s a high chance I’ll check out Red Nexus one day since its still on my mind.

A final walk through of the exhibition led me to finding this booth. I’m a sucker for a nice book cover and after chatting with the author, she managed to convince me to give her books a shot. The stories sound really fun. Within is a horror book while The Violet Fox is the first book of a four book series (if I remember correctly).

Art

My Guardian Playlist by Johnni Kok

I have A LOT of Johnni Kok art at our house. If you look at my past few years of Montreal and Toronto Comiccon, you will see that it is quite the popular thing in our house. It probably has to do with his drawing style that fits what I love and well, the amount of Chinese painting hanging on my walls. Honestly, I was going for some fan art initially but his original pieces are on point! When he told the story of the inspiration behind this one called My Guardian Playlist, it was just something that I loved because I have a strong connection to music.

Don Rosa

Check out our new Christmas art after we frame it of course. Its nice to switch things up and its been something I’ve been thinking about a long time. If you see Don Rosa at any conference, you should know that he has an incredible amount of knowledge and a passionate love for the origins of DuckTales which are comics form Carl Barks who is the creator of Scrooge McDuck. While I’m one of those people who have never read the source material, I love these characters a lot so this fits perfectly to what I love and Don Rosa draws beautiful. Just for the passion I saw, I’m definitely going to try and find these original comics.

Toronto Comics: Yonge at Heart ( Toronto Comics #4) by Steven Andrews

Ever since I’ve started Game Warp, I’ve been on the prowl on avenues to check out new games and Kickstarter is a great place to find all kinds of cool projects. It was through this channel that I landed on this project to fund a comic anthology based in Toronto. Although I don’t live in Toronto, I do go frequently and lately, its been at least once a year for the last two years for Toronto Comicon and such. Its great to see Canadian artists working hard to show off Canada and that is why I backed this project. Also, because I thought the art style and concept behind setting it in a city was really great. The comic book arrived sometime in July if I remember correctly and finally, I’ve sat down to read it and take a break from that huge novel that IT by Stephen King is.

Let’s check it out!

Toronto Comics: Yonge at Heart (Volume 4)

I have read any of the previous volumes of Toronto Comics however these are anthologies so are separate from each other. Yonge at Heart is a fun little compilation. It tackles many issues which is endearing to those familiar to the landmarks and setting but does embrace a general spectrum of issues that people tackle whether its sexuality or immigration and some light-hearted ones as well. Yonge at Heart has 21 stories in it all from different artists and writers and each hold their own unique style. I would like to say there’s a little bit for everyone.

The top 5 favorites of the book go to the following:

Signal Problems: A fantastic way to kick off Yonge at Heart as it takes us into a world filled with monsters and the headaches of public transporation may amount to something more fantastical like the workers being city protectors of monsters.

My First Slice: Being born in Canada, we never had to wonder what pizza tastes like but what about those that immigrate here? I’m guessing the story here is before the world was so multinational but it shows an immigrant family finally decide to go get a pizza and we may relate when we go to a restaurant that is ouside of our culture. Its a fun one to read. Especially since I can relate from the final reactions from the kid and his parents.

Dundas & Dragons: Get it? Instead of Dungeons and Dragons? This one is really fun. Plus, I love the art style for it where it gives a fun twist of aliens playing as earthlings through a game and its about friends going away. That true bond of friendship that can be developed through gaming.

Con-Text: Con-Text is a cool selection. There isn’t really any dialogue but the artwork here shows a cosplayer immersed in their world as there is also a contrast of reality outside of her vicinity. Its not so apparent until she reaches the event.

Home and Country: Yet another immigrant story. However, this one is very nice. The drawings are more sketch-like and I also enjoy that style quite a but. Its about two sisters that separated in two countries because one immigrates to Canada to get married and then the sister falls suit but in the end, its about a home is where you feel like you belong. What defines a home versus a country, right?

There are 21 stories here so I can’t review them all but as an overall experience, there were some stories I was not too intrigued by however, that definitely was a minority. I enjoyed this comic anthology a lot and it has me curious to look for the previous volumes.

Archie, Volume 3 by Mark Waid

Next up in the reading adventures is back to the comic/graphic comic world. I still can’t decide which category I should call this one. Regardless, Archie Volume 3 was released just last month and there was a lovely online sale at Indigo so I ordered this one at a pretty awesome price. Its been a fun time reading these and is very cool to check out in between novels as a refresher to cleanse the palette before starting something new. However, this is one of the last new physical books for the year. I have a sizable TBR list and I really need to get cracking on a lot of them.

Archie, Volume 3

This renewed Archie world is great so far and this third book is no exception. I haven’t quite managed to get the TV Binge post put together for Riverdale but I love the character of Cheryl Blossom. She is a girl with a lot of motives but it is also with a character like this that has a hidden agenda that brings out the nature of some of our other characters. In this book, I am mostly referring to Veronica. It is always interesting how the book isn’t always about Archie and will turn its focus on the girls or the other feuds or situations with other characters. However, that sometimes still makes Archie the least appealing to watch grow (both in the comics or the show) because he always just literally stumbles clumsily into situations and tries to do everything with the best intentions and ends up with the worst results. It does warrant some funny moments. With that said, one of my fave parts of this one was when Archie wanted to be like Jughead and in turn, being his best friend, Jughead had to hold the fort and be Archie, making Betty point out why Archie wanted to be him and in a roundabout way, let us learn a little more about both of these guys. While there was a lack of Betty in this book, that one part made her presence be felt regardless.

Volume 3 truly picks up where the last volume ended and not only adds a new colorful character to challenge the group but also further develops the main players to make sure they remain interesting in this modernized version of Archie. While Betty is seen less in this book, the main focus was on Archie and Veronica and their fight for their romance. It brought forth changes in their characters that lead them to acknowledge who they are. Along with beautiful illustrations from Joe Eisma, Archie, Volume 3 is a great read.

Amulet series Books#1-6 by Kazu Kibuishi

I’m no frequent reader of comics or graphic novels but I’m slowly getting into it.  The Amulet series was a completely sporadic find one day when I was looking through the Best Kindle free ebooks section and the entire series was there.  Obviously, I don’t miss out on these things especially when I’m still trying to balance the whole homeowner situation and surviving and attempting to save no matter how much I cut out.  Books is one of those things so free stuff, I love it! 😉 Anyways, so that’s how I found this series which feels like a manga series but has that whole teenage fantasy story going on.  It works for me.  I really don’t mind these things.  Plus, its extremely relaxing to be reading books geared towards younger audiences especially after a whole month of pain with  Mansfield Park.

I read one and a half Amulet books a day so its a really good.  Just to give you an idea of why I’m doing a post for all six books instead of one for each. Plus, I’m really lazy and I have a thousand other posts to get done before the festival season starts in Montreal (well, it kind of did already).

Anyways, done with the rambling! Let’s check this out!!

Amulet Vol.1: The Stonekeeper

After her father’s death, her mother moves Emily and her younger brother Navin to her family home in a deserted countryside.  However, one night, her mom goes to the basement to check a noise and the kids realize that she is taken away by a mysterious monster.  In the effort to save her, Emily finds an amulet that tells her she’s the stonekeeper that will save Alledia.  With her brother, they attempt to save their parents with the help of a few characters along the way.

Amulet is a quick read and very well paced.  The action starts right away and the journey to Alledia and saving their mother.  Plus, the elements and struggle of being a Stonekeeper is a really good concept.  There’s a lot to like for Book 1 and sets up the perfect stage to look forward to see Emily and her friends and family continue on their journey as they support her role as Stonekeeper, one that they all are learning just as much as she is.

Amulet Vol.2: The Stonekeeper’s Curse

 The sequel seems to dive a little deeper into what being a Stonekeeper means.  For Emily, its still about finding the control over the amulet and not letting take control of her.  At the same time, her mom is still in grave danger and needs to be saved.  Navin takes on a bigger role and we get introduced to working with Miskit and Cogsley, the robots created by Silas, the great grandfather of Emily (I think). At the same time, we also start to get introduced to another key player who has his own agenda but joins into Emily’s team.  As they get to Alledia, they learn that a curse has caused humans to gradually turn into animals and this new character is exactly that and with some awesome fighting skills, we have Leon Redbeard.  For me, Leon is a great addition and if anything, this lifted up the book a little more.  Plus, there’s a lot more about the Elves and where everything stands.

Overall, a solid sequel that still works to build on the plot and adds in a few new characters to keep the story moving along.

Amulet Vol. 3: The Cloud Searchers

The next mission is about finding how to save Alledia and the only way is to seek help from the vanished city of Cielis that has the mystery council.  While Cielis is believed to have been destroyed many years ago, there are still a few that believe it has become a floating city hidden above the clouds. Emily and her crew seek out the new city to find that its not what they expected because its been corrupted.

The story of Amulet series seems to be a lot of changed motives and unexpected/compromised situations.  I’m not complaining.  These books are directed to a younger audience so my expecting something to happen is perfectly normal. What I liked about this sequel is how Emily and Navin both are developing as characters and we are able to see their strengths along with some of the other characters.

Amulet Vol. 4: The Last Council 

Cielis isn’t quite what they expected and something seems to be wrong.  That’s when Emily meets Max, who wants to help her become part of the council.  Except the council and Cielis are separating her crew without her knowing about it.  As the group separates, they each go off to learn more about what has happened by other sources.

The Last Council picks up a little more action than the previous two books where we start seeing a little more back story on the characters we get introduced to help thicken the plot a little more.

Amulet Vol. 5: The Prince of the Elves

Since the first book, Prince of the Elves is the one that I enjoyed the most and breezed through.  It has a lot more action and sticky situations.  Now we finally get a grasp of what the whole elves against the humans/Alledians are and who is behind all this.  Its a lot more fun with some more creative species into the mix and some battles.  The characters are having a good development and the decisions they make are starting to really shape who they are.

Amulet Vol. 6: Escape From Lucien

 Escape from Lucien features siblings Emily and Navin going in separate directions.  They both have their own missions to reach the end goal of finding a way to stop the Elf King.  The Amulet series has really turned into something fun.  I can see how kids may enjoy this because they can enjoy both a girl and guy protagonist.  The characters are simple and so are their goals: to save Alledia and get out of all this trouble, maybe even get home one day.  Except being a Stonekeeper isn’t easy for Emily, she has her destiny and she’s starting to see how losing control of the stone can affect her.

Overall, the Amulet series is a fun and quick read.  It has good pacing and even though for the older crowd (like me), its a little simple and predictable, the characters are all very lovable and there’s the little animal based ones which are just downright cute.  The bad guys are villainous but not too scary in their evil ways.  There’s a lot of action to keep things rolling and keep the plot unravelling into whatever sticky situation they get stuck in.  And the best part, the artwork. Especially those full page scenes of where the crew end up, its breathtaking and awesome.  I’m reading this on my tablet but imagine it printed in a book, it would be just wow. I’m sure glad that I ended up surfing on the free reads section on Amazon under this category that day but even if I had to pay for the next one, I probably would.  Its a really neat series! 🙂

Arcade Block Unboxing: March 2015!

A month passes by so quick! We’re at March’s Arcade Block unboxing! Just received on Monday and I headed over and unboxed it!

This month is a special one because there’s two shirts in the box! It also marks the end of my first 3 month subscription of this block.  While I had originally wanted to give the other two blocks a shot, the final decision was that we’d continue with the Arcade Block for a 6 month subscription because we just love gaming stuff too much 🙂  I probably will give Horror Block a go at the end of the year around October. As for Nerd Block, I ordered the Nerd Block version of Grab Block which is stuff from last year’s inventory or something. I don’t quite mind.  So a few things coming in the mail soon! The fun never ends! 🙂

Street Fighter  LED Flashlight

I’m not great at combat games but Street Fighter was iconic.  Mortal Kombat and Tekken was also a phase but nothing really compares to Street Fighter and the awesome characters.  I’ve already found a use for this flashlight in my new and really not very well lit neighborhood.  Haha!

The whole exclusive item being Batman Arkham Knight and honestly, its one of the reasons I want to get a PS4.  The upgrade will happen eventually this year.  But all this is right now is paper in a plastic bag because the boyfriend is forbidding me from opening it.  Apparently its how comic books retain their worth x amount of years down the road. Excuse me, if thats the case it works, how do you read comics, eh? I don’t understand….  I’m too practical for this hobby apparently.

Tug of War: Marvel or DC?

I’ve been pretty busy this week so I haven’t dropped by to The Matticus Kingdom to check out your answers but I just did a quick skim and there’s been a lot of comments which is fantastic.  If you haven’t read THIS post, asking you join into The Offical  Matticus Kingdom Tug of War, well, you probably should head over HERE to check it out instead! The question we are tugging for in this war is: Which universe of superheroes (and villains) is superior: Marvel or DC?

Now, the big question here is which side did I pick? I could’ve just answered in the comments but you know, I like to talk and ramble 😉 I’ll try to keep it short, ok?

Just in case you are unfamiliar, because I’m a mega beginner.  I only know about either of them because of movies.  Here’s a poster for each of them.

So, which side am I going to pull with all my force, right?

Its really funny actually.  For all of today before I sat down to write this and search up those images, I was thinking I’d back DC comics because hey, there’s Batman, Catwoman, The Joker and some pretty impressive heros and villains.  I haven’t experienced the apparent awesomeness (from what I’e heard) of Arrow yet so it wouldn’t be fair to include that.

But, as much as it pains me to say this, lets get those apologies out there. I’m sorry, Batman, I had to let you go. I can’t defend DC Universe. If one of my really good friends read this, she will give me a lesson also, but still…

*sigh of relief* Now that thats out of the way. I’m joining all of you tugging for Marvel.

Now, hear me out, ok? I had to pick a side and not just a hero.  If it was a hero, Batman would win hands-down but I took a good hard look at DC Universe and what its had to offer (in terms of movies).  Other than Batman and Catwoman, Green Lantern was a disaster and not to mention a snoozefest. Watchmen was a mega weird one and still so boring (but apparenlty I’m the minority who thinks that), and well, I didn’t see Jonah Hex because Megan Fox was in it and I don’t really want to watch it. Call it a lack of exposure to other DC universe characters but they aren’t winning over my heart right this moment.

With that said, Marvel has done a great job.  All the characters are fun.  Wolverine and X-men kicked some ass along with Cyclops and Rogue and the whole bunch.  Even the villains were pretty bad-ass.  I mean Xavier to Magneto, epic! 🙂 Then, just look at The Avengers. Would you want to mess with The Hulk? I wouldn’t.  I mean, thats one of the reasons, I would not choose DC either.  I mean, Joker is pretty nasty but some big-ass green dude can probably crush me.  Look over at the positives: Thor is just fantastic, I mean, he’s a demi-god. I think that says it all.  Ironman is not godly but he is quite torn and broken but pretty powerful in his own way.  And then, we have Hawkeye who is a great archer and Black Widow is a femme fatale right now.  A great team right there! Oh and how can I forget, Blade is in this mix also.  Who doesn’t love a vampires? I know I do!

What wins it for me has to be Spiderman though.  I mean, it was pretty much a battle between Spiderman and Batman in the first place.  I’m not very much Tobey Maguire Spiderman as opposed to Andrew Garfield but Spiderman is quite Amazing in itself.  There’s a god, a few superhumans and some pretty awesome fighting capabilities in this mesh and I’d say Marvel is the winner, for me at least 🙂
