Happy New Year: 2019 in Review!

2019 is finally wrapped up. It was an overall okay year. Some good, some bad, some average stuff happened. I made some decisions about personal changes in habits and other general life things that I want to do in 2020 for my own sanity and sake. However, we’re all about being positive here and the blog has definitely kept me through a lot of that even if its been so long and some months are much busier than I expect.

Before I get to housekeeping the blog and 2020 plans (coming up in a later post), which should last a good few days, its time to take a moment to reflect on the blog going-ons in 2019 and take a quick look at some stats, faves, and of course successes.

2019 in Review

2019 was something of a crazy year! I covered a few film festivals: some first time ones and then watched a reviewed a ton of movies. The views had some incredibly huge growths and then also had some very low days. At so many years on, stats really is just a number but does make me wonder what makes it grow sometimes. A look at some general stats without digging too deep.

  • Total views: 57,244 (decrease from the previous year but then 2018 was the best year in blogging for me)

Definitely some interesting stats as I never realized that my TV Binges, especially for Chinese dramas and variety shows did so well. I’m just wondering who is reading them as they are definitely a slow accumulation over time. I do those mostly for my own enjoyment and not thinking that many people will read it.

2019 also has some other challenges and overviews in films and Goodreads Reading Challenges.

Goodreads Reading Challenge

  • Goodreads Reading Challenge was increased from the beginning of the year halfway, which resulted in my failing to reach the goal. I did log a book collection which was 4 books considered as 1 read. Technically I reached the goal, right? The total books read was 27 books! According to the My Year in Books 2019 from Goodreads.

In the reading department, I actually skewed away from a lot of what I had intended on reading at the beginning of the year probably when I did the 2019 plans. However, I did discover quite a few good reads and caught up with some reads sitting around that was way overdue.

Movies & Letterboxd

While Letterboxd’s Year in Review hasn’t come out yet, I’m going to start a little look over with the help of its stats to see how the movie watching thing was. Do note that my viewings were bloated by short film viewings but also lost some of the films that were premieres at film festivals and wasn’t listed yet but most likely forgot to go back and add them back later on.

TV Binging in Review

Last thing to look at before we wrap up this much longer than expected post (causing me to change the original structure) – TV! Suffice to say that I watched a lot of Chinese dramas and variety shows. Much more than the English stuff. Its been a nice change in pace overall and there’s some really nice Chinese dramas out there, which are also getting acquired by Netflix or released as Netflix series. As I’m a ton of TV binges behind, this is where the What’s Up segment is going to help a ton in compiling this portion (although I have a clear idea of my faves already).

Overall, 2019 was a pretty decent year. I had some nice little fun successes like getting a few festival media accreditation and some rather fun little screener links offered for review. Its been rather busy starting from Montreal Comiccon in July then jumping straight to Fantasia International Film Festival, followed by a first time accreditation for Toronto After Dark Film Festival covering short films, then went on to a first time press pass for Festival du Nouveau Cinema and then finally a remote coverage for Blood in the Snow Film Festival. There was a lot of fun little movie discoveries as well as an appreciation for short films. A lot of originally planned things (from what I remembered) wasn’t all that achieved but at the same time, it went relatively smoothly.

My December Adventures!

Its the last day of December. Isn’t that crazy? I’m doing this on the last day instead of tomorrow since we have 2020 business to take care of then so shifting things up a little. We’re going through the very busy December and all kinds of recap and seemingly a bunch of shopping and gifts and fairs and outings, etc.

Fingers crossed that all will go as planned as writing in December has been a bit all over the place… (it hasn’t because this is going up much later than expected)

Marbled Ornaments

Next up, I went along and tried out some Marbled Ornaments as well! Which was mostly a failed attempt in general but did decide that its a project to further pursue and figure out. Plus, its some nice way to use up old nail polish so that its not just thrown out without some form of recycling/repurposing. You can check my post on that HERE.

Marché Casse-Noisette & Mini-Comiccon

Marche Casse -Noisette took place from November 28 to December 8 at Palais des Congres which happened to overlap with Mini Montreal Comiccon held December 7 and 8 also at Palais des Congres just one was in the main hall and the other was upstairs. With that said, it made sense to go and check out both at the same time. While the haul wasn’t particularly a lot, it was a first time visit for both place for myself. Some nice discoveries to be found. I will definitely go check the Marché Casse-Noisette again but probably not the Mini Comiccon as its rather lackluster.

A lot of the SMAQ 2019 sales is about the same as previous years, the exception being that I bought the spread from Nutra Fruit and the chocolate from Choco Chocolat, which I believe is a new booth this year at the Salon. Most of this stuff is for festival party time and gifts and whatnot.

Ottawa Day Trip

Mavericks Donut

We took a quick trip with a friend to go to Ottawa to do some quick errands. We had a nice lunch at Fatboys (post about our first time HERE) and then finally found time to go grab some donuts at Mavericks Donut, which they had 4 dairy-free flavors and the husband and the friend each chose 4 to get a dozen. After that, I finally brought home Pumbaa from Disney Store to join Timon at our place and then picks up some wine at LCBO and some food in preparation for NYE dinner plans at T&T Supermarket.

Holiday Festivities: Christmas Dinners & NYE Hotpot

Christmas Eve dinner was a ton of fun with a lot of people at the in-laws. It was a fun little event with some surprise gifts for ourselves which we didn’t expect to get anything in the first place. My mom wanted to have a turkey feast (as shown above) so she held a dinner and invited us and some of her own friends for dinner and here we have the overzealous food galore. Everything was delicious as usual. NYE is a hotpot meal and part of the Battle of Ingredients festivities so a separate post will be done for that.

Boxing Day Shopping Haul

Boxing Day this year has been a little less exciting. It has to do a lot with the fact that we’ve been trying to decrease expenses and its truly changed the spending habits into being very cautious with our expenses. Its not going to seem it since we’ve done a lot of shopping this past month…seemingly..but then its all useful things or food. Either way, without further ado (as this is the last part before this post ends)..the shopping haul from Boxing Day.

With July being hectic and then August being more of a laidback and recharging phase, September comes back with a little back to normal balance. Dreamhack Montreal happened over the weekend of September 6 to 8 at the Olympic Stadium. It had some changes but this venue is still very suitable for this event overall. It was a bustling weekend with a lot of last minute changes that swapped my schedule around quite a bit. However, all the media coverage is over at Game Warp Blog. IT: Chapter Two & Lambcast

IT Chapter Two

We’ve really kept the theatre experience to a minimum this year except for special commitments that lead me to go. This time, it was for Lambcast recording of IT: Chapter Two that gave us the kick in our behinds to go check it out. We really did enjoy the first one so had it in our plans to see the second one anyways (just probably not on opening weekend initially). I’m not sure when we’ll be heading to the theatres again this year but it might happen again, who knows? I’m not quite on top of the theatre new releases as I should be.

Moon Festival

Moon Festival happened on September 13th. Wonderful that it clashed with Friday the 13th because I have to say that it was a pretty okay day compared to the rest of the week prior to that. It was also full of sickness and a lot of cough-filled nights. Either way, I ignored my cold (which won’t go away and seems to keep morphing) and ate some moon cake as well as stood by the window and stared at the full moon for a little while, reminding myself that life is beautiful because I’m breathing and looking at those nice little moments of nature and nightscapes and such.

Friend’s Bachelorette Party – Dinner Out

One of my girl friend’s bachelorette party happened the Saturday on the second last weekend. She had it in two parts: the first was dinner and the second was an after party. Due to some other commitment (see below), I only went for the dinner party which was at Ichigo Ichie (which is the restaurant part of ramen place I like, Yokato Yokabai).

Festival du Nouveau Cinema Starting Soon

FNC 2019

Much to my surprise, today’s announcements also include a press approval for Festival du Nouveau Cinema! Last year, I only got the 10 vouchers to go see 10 movies which had some pretty great films, with one or two that left a little to desire but didn’t fail on being artsy or creative. It will be exciting to see how many we can catch this year as well as what the movie lineup will be as that only goes live tomorrow (Oct.1). Keep an eye out for reviews during the festival from Oct.9 to 20th!

Friend’s Wedding Day + Flowers Help Out

The last weekend of September was all kinds of crazy and lots of fun. Saturday was a day of hunting down flowers at various Costco. Between myself and another friend, we hit 5 Costcos in the morning. We met up in the early after to start making the “boutonnieres” for the groom and groomsmen and men of the families and then went along and made the bride and bridesmaids bouquet as well as a throwaway one. For myself, it was a learning experience since I had never done these before so it was all to help out.

We started out the morning to help with the door games (if you don’t know what that is, its part of Chinese weddings to pick up the bride, the groom and his groomsmen and other guys go to trials before he can pick her up). Then, we helped out with the set-up and mostly with the flowers to put together the vases. Yet again, I’m not too experienced with this so just helped out with my other friend. The picture on top is the centerpiece at our table with the flower arrangement. It was a ton of fun! I have a few more artsy pics going on Avenue of Daydreams at some point. It was a really fun night but we couldn’t stay as late as Sunday means work on Monday (aka today).

Announcement: Halloween Horror Marathon

As usual, September adventures wraps up with the official announcement of the Halloween Horror Marathon tomorrow (October 1st)! We’ll be doing double features as per the usual set up nowadays. At the same time, I’ll be trying to put in some horror TV series TV binge posts as well as horror book reviews as well. That’s the plan! While some movies have already been watched at this point (and probably/hopefully written up), I would love to hear what movies you suggest or movies you always watch for Halloween marathon and maybe I’ll see if I can add those in or push it up as higher priority on my list (if its there). All update of Halloween marathon posts will be updated on the page HERE.

On a side note, due to the festival approval, marathon might be slower in the middle of the month! I am working to get more posts done in advance but I do have other priorities as well as podcast recordings so I will do the best that I can before October 9th comes around and hopefully you will enjoy it!

What’s Up 2019: Week 4 Currently in progress…

Welcome to Week 4 of 2019 recap! Currently in progress is the theme here. Nothing much finished, a bit of progress in all categories and well, what else can I say other than the fact that life takes over and things fall apart. Its pretty obvious when last week had 3 posts go up and its been a long time since I’ve posted so little in a week’s span. It happens, we pick up and move forward. Its not a foreign routine but this year had a lot more of other factors affecting my own time so life gets priority in these cases.

Let’s see what is still in progress then (although you might know if you had seen last week..so sorry for the repetition if that’s the case.)

Currently reading: The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig

Its been a challenge to do anything other than work and sit around recuperating so reading on the bus has always fallen into a slow pace or just a very sleepy challenging moment. It has nothing to do with The Girl From Everywhere because its a pretty decent read. I like the idea and premise so far. I’m about halfway done and I think things are just about to take a change in pace and having some influential factors kick in. I’m pretty interested to see where the story goes from this point.

If reading on the bus has been affected, suffice to saying gaming has been almost non-existent. I’m still working on Mortal Kombat X on PC. However, when I get a chance, I mostly play on my mobile most of the time and the recent game I’ve been playing is Lemmings which has been revamped for mobile and its a pretty fun experience and has a pretty smooth transition.

  • Look Out, Officer! (rewatch) Review

This sad sad category should have two more movies added in but one didn’t make it because I only listened to it and while I don’t feel like its going to be any better even if I looked at the movie, I want to give a fair chance to finishing actually watching it. And the second, I watched halfway for Movies and Tea and fell asleep from over-exhaustion from the work week and massive overtime. Which ends up with the fact that I rewatched Look Out, Officer from Stephen Chow because life feels better even when its busy whenever I watch Stephen Chow, any Stephen Chow film usually works.

  • Who’s the Murderer (Season 4)

Currently binging: My Little One (Season 2), Meteor Garden (2018 rewatch), The Singer 2019, Behind the Scenes, Fated to Love You (2008)

Surprisingly, nothing pairs up with overtime like TV series and nothing relaxes me like watching a few episodes here and there. Not only is this the only category that had progress as in Who’s the Murderer aired its final Season 4 episode and positive to have Season 5 as the last episode did a nice spin to lead to the first episode of Season 5 but I also started up some series while not finishing any other ones I’m watching, but its also the category with new series started like Behind the Scenes which is currently still in progress and started up Fated to Love You (the Taiwan version from 2008).

Overall, we’re in a buffer week where everything is in limbo.
But as stressful and crazy as real life as been, the little time I got to spend with any form of entertainment was pretty nice.
Even if it resulted in me falling asleep… I might have been a monster blogger a few years back but sleep has become more and more essential as I get older.

Top 12 Anticipated Films of 2019!

2019 is here! While not all movies have had their release dates (or I’m just not looking at the right places), here is my list of anticipated film releases in 2019 in the order of release date and not preference. These are all theatrical releases from various places on where I see from Canadian release dates. I haven’t looked into  Netflix Originals or anything else. I would have wanted to spend some time looking at Foreign films as well but I’m going to stick with the mainstream films for now.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (February 22)

I am a huge fan of How to Train Your Dragon franchise. I thought the first film was fantastic and the second film was also pretty strong. At least it still kept the comedic tone and Toothless is always so fun to watch. I even loved it enough to watch the Christmas special. With the recent bit with Kit Harington, I have this newfound enthusiasm to check this one out. It might just be the first movie of 2019 that I head out to the theatres for.

Captain Marvel (March 8)

I’m super behind with Marvel movies. Well, maybe not super behind. I’m a few movies behind and I try to watch them in order of release since it all seems to link together if not it ends up having some plot points that get lost. However, Brie Larson is a pretty decent actress in the current Hollywood landscape so it will be nice to see how this role turns out.

Dumbo (March 29)

Tim Burton has had a bumpy ride on the Disney route. I personally never thought they were all that bad. However, I think that Dumbo and the psychedelic and darker themes works with Burton’s style. I’m interested to see where his imagination takes this film in the live action. I will do all that I can to see this especially since March is my birthday month so I’ve already requested the husband to go see Dumbo with me at the theatres.

Hellboy (April 12, 2019)

I’m kind of on the fence with Hellboy to be honest. The trailer has its issues that I’m not sure I’ll be running to the theatres to see this. BUT, it does have David Harbour and I like his style so maybe this might work out. Who knows, right? Plus, I love Milla Jovovich and she’s in this. April is kind of my crazy month so I might not end up seeing this in theatres but I’ll get around to it one way or another, especially since I’ll be catching up with the previous Hellboy because of Movies and Tea looking Guillermo Del Toro this season.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu (May 10)

I’m going to confess that I’m not much of a Pokemon fan mostly because I’m a Digimon fan. Does it really matter to make a difference? Not really. However, this trailer was so awesome. The voice acting for Pikachu and the whole tone of it works so well. It looks like a fun time and I love having fun watching movies.

John Wick 3: Parabellum (May 17)

I’m not sure which is a legit trailer for John Wick 3 or whether one has been released yet when I searched it up on Youtube so I’m just going to leave it as is for now. I just caught up with John Wick: Chapter 2 over the holidays and loved it almost as much as the first one. As I was talking to my husband about this, Keanu Reeves may have  more of a renowned role with Neo and The Matrix Trilogy but in terms of a solid and great character, I have to argue that John Wick is so much better plus the movie franchise is much more solid than how The Matrix unravels. I have to watch a John Wick film in theatres so I’m going to try my absolute best to get to the theatres to see this one.

Aladdin (May 24)

I love Aladdin! I’m not sure how I feel about Aladdin without Robin Williams as the voice of Genie but Disney is doing the whole live action trend of all the animated Disney films. I’m usually pretty happy with most of how it goes, although I have to admit the rewatchability sometimes doesn’t have the same appeal as its animated version. Aladdin’s teaser trailer looks nice visually but the trailer doesn’t really show much else except a nice twist to the music in an orchestral way. I wonder if it’ll still be the fantastic musical elements that are from the animated film because that made Aladdin memorable for me. The story was a fun adventure but still, we’ll have to see when possibly another trailer comes out to see how its going to be approached.

Godzilla: God of Monsters (May 31)

Having a Godzilla film on my list seems odd as I haven’t watched any Godzilla films before and I know nothing about Godzilla except what it looks like and what my podcast co-host Elwood talks to me about it as he is very knowledgeable about it. However, I loved the two trailers that has been released for this. Its look really good and fits the blockbuster grandeur especially with its visuals and its cast as well.

The Lion King (July 19)

The Lion King is an epic film. I’ve seen the animated film a ton of times and I’ve seen the Broadway on Tour when it was at Place des Arts in Montreal a few years ago. So, count me in for this one. This one does land right smack in between Fantasia Film Festival so I might have to get creative to see it in theatres, of course, that depends whether I get media coverage again, right? Regardless, this one looks really cool even if its just a teaser trailer.

Hobbs and Shaw (August 2)

And then we head into the unknown territory which is slated but no trailers yet. I’m a huge fan of Fast and the Furious franchise and some of the later movies truly had a lot of fun because of Vin Diesel but I loved them a lot for Dwayne Johnson’s character as Hobbs. He fits the character so well so having a spinoff with him and Jason Statham’s character Shaw is fantastic. It sounds like a lot of fun just in the action and one-liner department. No trailers yet but definitely looking forward to seeing one eventually to have a better idea.

IT: Chapter 2 (September 6)

I liked IT: Chapter 1 a ton. The more I think about it, the more I think it did a really good job. I still think that a part of me would’ve liked the strengths of the new and the old to combine and then it would have been the perfect movie. However, just for the Pennywise design and the horrors it was able to achieve in Chapter 1 makes me curious to see where it takes Chapter 2 especially with a pretty decent cast with Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy and so on.

Zombieland 2 (October 11)

Ten years later Zombieland was released, we’re FINALLY getting Zombieland 2. I’m a huge fan of Zombieland and I rewatch it every once in a while for fun. That movie was awesome in so many ways. I’m not sure how its going to translate after 10 years or just what direction its going to take.  I am happy that the original cast is back and hopefully it’ll be able to still pull off the same fun appeal even if some of the cast has done some cringe-y roles in other films over the last 10 years and has changed as well. We’ll just have to see if they can pull off the same vibe or at least the same vibe but maybe a little more mature. Full confidence in Woody Harrelson being still as awesome though.

Overview of 2018 & What’s Happening in 2019!

Welcome to the annual overview post. I didn’t get a chance to get to it yesterday so I’m doing a quick one with the look forward to 2019. We could do two posts but I’m honestly not really in the mood to overload anyone with these posts. Its more of a reminder of what I’ve achieved in 2018 and new or adjusted plans to work with for 2019!

OVERVIEW OF 2018

2018 was a rough year in general. I had some PC issues in the beginning of the year which caused a whole lot of crazy as I had to get another PC built which put a lot of stuff behind. We had some other personal issues that caused a lot of worries and issues. However, 2018 is over now and as I look back, there were some really nice achievements and that is what matters. I started Tranquil Dreams to focus on the positives in the first place so that is what we’re going to do right now.

What to Expect in 2019!

2019 is here! A lot was done last year when I look back so I’m hoping to keep up and polish some social media skills and hopefully promote the blog a little better. Its all about working on the content right now. A lot of my issues this past year when I look back is procrastination and that sprouted from lack of organization or following through with tentative schedules and just not having the motivation from all the garbage that life threw at me.   • What stays the same: Most movies and TV from Netflix and rentals and Web series on Youtube as well as film festival coverages
  • Adding in focus on Chinese language Asian movies and TV series (could be China, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan, Singapore)

FOOD & DINING

  • Battle of Ingredients, Goodfood recap, Food Festivals and Restaurants
  • Baking Through Disney revival (whether its Disney reviews and conceptualizing baking projects)

WEEKLY/MONTHLY SEGMENTS

  • Music Obsessions (first weekend of each month)
  • Wine Recap (10th of each month)
  • Weekly Adventures (15th and 30/31 of each month)
  • What’s Up (everyday Wednesday – possibly back to video format)
  • Sunday Lists (biweekly to monthly frequency)

The main shift this year is the focus on Chinese language Movies, TV and possibly books since I’ve been meaning to get back to some Chinese reading. I’ve felt like a part of what started off a lot of my interests in the first place so when I moved into blogging and gave up a lot of it, its been always something that I’ve been trying to get back to. Its a risky move because no one really reads those posts but this space is about my interests and I do want to share those interests with you especially since a lot of it is now moved to more modern platforms like Netflix and Youtube having access.

Other than that, after some thought, I’m also heading back to more food-oriented content. It might be a slow start but I have changed my approach on the Baking Through Disney project and will start on reviewing Disney films while figuring out how to approach the design for baking. That way the project doesn’t get held up and ends up falling apart again.

As for What’s Up, as I’ve mentioned before, will end up going back to a video and written format. Both formats are fun to do so depending on time, I will work on trying to have both of them  paired up.
