Double Feature: Truth or Dare (2017) & Truth or Dare: Extended Director’s Cut (2018)

Next up in the double feature is a pairing of 2017’s Truth or Dare and 2018’s Truth or Dare. The latter is an Extended Director’s Cut because that’s all Netflix has. Let’s check it out!

Truth or Dare (2017)

Truth or Dare 2017

Director: Nick Simon

Cast: Cassandra Scerbo, Brytni Sarpy, Mason Dye, Alexxis Lemire, Ricardo Hoyos, Luke Baines, Harvey Guillen, Christina Masterson, Heather Langenkamp

Eight college friends head to a “Haunted Rental” for Halloween. But when they replay the game that made the house infamous, they awaken an evil spirit intent on stealing their souls. – IMDB

2017’s Truth or Dare is direct to video supernatural horror film which plays along the concept of a supernatural being in a house that gets unleashed when friends go there that chases them down for 3 rounds of Truth or Dare before leaving them alone. With a rather ambiguous sort of ending and a cast of part frustrating and part decent characters but some rather intense dare executions, Truth or Dare is an okay offering. Sure, there’s a lot of bad dialogue and one of the characters in particular were especially annoying to watch but there is an undeniable sinister vibe and a cameo of Heather Langenkamp as a previous survivor of one of these games.

Truth or Dare did have a pretty imbalance pacing. The beginning half was a lot of setting up the situation and getting the crew into this location which they soon realize is part of this “scary rentals” site which is never a good idea but they still go along with it. things spiral out of control really fast when their first dare is to make out with another girl or a truth about a secret, which brings up a whole lot of questions that they don’t seem to ask, and things from that point jumps up in intensity really quickly. Its all kind of a ridiculous sort of set up in story progression since the only thing that the previous survivor does is state the obvious but gives them pointers on how to make it out alive, which still leads to arguments about what needs to be done.

As much as it sounds like I’m hating on Truth or Dare, I’m honestly not. The characters are a little annoying and frustrating particularly the character Jessie and the dialogue in general is a tad uninspiring but the movie is sinister and the tension is effective enough plus some of the dares and how they need to be smart about sharing the dare to stay alive has some decent execution. Overall, some good some bad so an okay watch.

Truth or Dare: Extended Director’s Cut (2018)

Truth or Dare 2018

Director (and co-writer): Jeff Wadlow

Cast: Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Hayden Szeto, Sophia Ali, Nolan Gerard Funk, Landon Liboiron, Sam Lerner, Tom Choi, Aurora Perrineau

A harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone – or something – begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.  – IMDB

Let’s put it out there right away that I haven’t seen Truth or Dare’s theatrical release but I did do a little research on the differences to the extended director’s cut which is the version currently on Netflix. Extended Director’s Cut includes a lot more of the rated scenes that was removed to fit a PG-13 rating. I’m sure that it does add to the experience since Truth or Dare is its best when its in the process of the truth or dare segments. One part of it I’m not a big fan and it’ll be talked about later.

Taking a quick moment to compare (seeing as I did watch this back to back), Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare is definitely a bigger budget with a lot more familiar faces like Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Landon Liboiron (Hemlock Grove), Hayden Szeto (The Edge of Seventeen) and Violett Beane (The Flash) and a story that gives this Truth or Dare a deeper lore to discover. There are more concrete rules and a set sequence for them to follow. It jumps between Mexico and US and a lot of different backstories and secrets from the characters. All of these things having their pros and cons.

The flow of the story is decent and the truth and dare segments are pretty decent as they have that cringe and tension of when its going to drop. It has a sequence of how the truth and dare rounds go and the mystery of whether the previous person went which gives the viewers more knowledge than the characters. The only issue with those segments is the possession phase where the characters all change into these creepy smiling faces with kind of distorted voices which for one, isn’t as scary as they think it is and second, gets overused so becomes more frustrating and predictable than effective by the end. At the same time, the jumping from Mexico and US is a little crazy because its like a trip to the grocery story with their frequency, not to mention at one part they have a gun and can cross the border, which seems absolutely ridiculous. The next point is some illogical scenes that just don’t really make a ton of sense. I know these movies aren’t meant to be dug into detail and watched really for their face value but some things are hard to ignore.

The only thing I do have to say that really made up for the 2017 is that the characters here are much more bearable. Maybe its the cast and it has to do with the characters while still being fairly one dimensional still have a certain level of back story even though its fairly easy to figure out who is going to die and whatnot. Plus, the ending is a kind of a fun opening for a sequel or something.

As a final note, for myself, I’m pretty done with Truth or Dare concept. It seems like after back to back years of Truth or Dare premise, it can be tucked away and really doesn’t seem like they can do anything more unique since both of these carry the same kind of execution of some possessed and cursed game where the characters pretty much have a slim chance of getting out. But who knows, right? Someone out there will find a twist for it somehow. It always seems to happen at some point.

That’s it for this Truth or Dare double feature!
Have you seen these two? Which do you prefer?

Game Warp Podcast: 2017 Gaming in Review (with guest Insomnia Knights)

After a rather longer than usual hiatus due to the technical difficulties I’ve talked about  here before with my computer which does the video editing, we’re finally back with an overdue 2017 in review episode with our darling friend and guest Insomnia Knights. We talk about our thoughts on 2017 games and some games that stood out for us as well as some little tangents on Telltale Games and our feelings about the Nintendo Switch now that its finally released and has a few games released.

Do remember that this is 2 months after our recording. Better late than never, right?

Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed!
What are your thoughts on 2017 in Gaming?

2017 in Review!

2017 is only a few hours away from midnight! I’ve waited all day to think about how to put this together. We’re looking back at 2017 and thinking back, this year has been a really tough one. While the stats for Tranquil Dreams have been dropping slightly in the last two years, I don’t mind so much because I’m actually happy with the content I put out because I put a lot more time and effort in everything. This year has had a lot of fun stuff of course, the tough parts all really go to the personal life part being difficult, in particular the biggest aspect being that my health wasn’t great with getting hit with one infection after the next. Hopefully 2018 will bring better times. At least I have things I’ll talk about tomorrow that I hope for 2018 to accomplish that might add some balance. The wonderful balance that we all try to strive for when juggling blogging and real life.

Taking a look at the dropping 2017 stats, I’m still fairly  happy with it.

348 posts published (excluding this one)

Another fun fact is that Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter actually brought in more readers this year. I’m really happy to see that because hey, I’ve been working hard on social media and especially on the Twitter front. I can’t say that I’m a pro by any means but I’m trying really hard to figure it out a little more.

According to Letterboxd, I watched 137 movies. Most of them new viewings with a few exceptions that were repeats. To be fair, I might not have logged it but a few of my faves and were on Netflix were watched on repeat on the tougher days.

My top 10 movies watched (not only 2017 releases in no particular order):

  • Mr. Right
  • Singin’ In the Rain
  • The Edge of Seventeen
  • The Vampire Cleanup Department
  • Better Watch Out
  • A Taxi Driver
  • Blue Jay
  • The Autopsy of Jane Doe
  • Kong: Skull Island
  • Fast Convoy

However, I did fall short technically of my Goodreads Challenge although two of my selection were three book packs so I should have surpassed the goal. However, I’ll put some thought in how many books I’ll set for next year. In terms of book reviews, this year I took on some book tours from Shannon from Reads and Reels who has her book tour gig. If you are an aspiring author and need some promotion, go seek her out for some book tours. She’s offered up some great reads in the past year. If not, you should still check out her blog for some fantastic content on both book and movie reviews.

2017 also saw the official start of a TV Binge index since I’m enjoying having more TV binge posts. Diving back into more TV series has been a refreshing turn in events that has been a fantastic journey. I have a few series that I’m looking to catch up on next year.

Its been a great 2017 despite personal issues that has hindered some blogging motivation but overall, I’m happy with how things are going. Sure, some things like the Classics and the Baking Through Disney hit a snag but next year, you’ll see that I have some rather concrete plans for them. I’ll talk about that tomorrow.

Its almost midnight here and I’ve sneaked up away from my guests to finish up this post!

Hope you’ve all had a fantastic 2017 and I’ll be sharing my plans for 2018 tomorrow!
Happy New Year, my lovelies!

What’s Up in 2017!

hello-2017

2017 is here! There will be some changes around here. Some new, some old, not a whole lot swapped out as you will see soon below! I have an issue of letting go, maybe… Its okay though, it’ll all work out! I haven’t talked about resolutions for a year or two here but I feel like I probably should because that explains some of the changes, which won’t really make a huge impact for any segment in particular but will keep myself accountable for certain things.

Baking & Recipes

Its been a rough year for recipes. I’ve only added maybe somewhere around 10 to 20 new recipes this past year. I’m a little disappointed with myself even though we did have the additional unboxing for Miss Fresh (which will continue this year).

New Cooking Project: I do have some news on a project in the planning with my awesome childhood friend, Starry Traveler. She’s very much busy with a lot of her personal life stuff of late and her blog is less active but we have been talking about a cooking project. This project will hopefully open our horizons to new ingredients and recipe ideas. We are planning the first one some time later this month and I’ll have an announcement post soon. All details on frequency and whatnot is still being decided.

Disney Movies

Baking Through Disney: I started this one back in 2015 and only TWO movies have been fully complete with the baking projects. And I have the 3rd review done but then got stuck on Fantasia’s recipe to make. It is what threw me off. So, I’ve made the executive decision to put that baking on hold and jump forward to the next movie, Dumbo. There is a solid goal for one movie to be done each month. If I can get more, that will be good but for now, I’m aiming to do 10 movies (in case there are months like Fantasia Festival in July where I won’t be home enough to do it). These are the movies coming up: Dumbo, Bambi, Make Mine Music, The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians. However, if you do have a suggestion for what to bake for Fantasia, please suggest ahead and I’ll try to figure out a way to make it happen.

Books

2016 was the year that I made the resolution to not buy any new books for the entire year to make sure that I could get through all those unread novels sitting in my Kindle and to save money. With that said, I did explore a lot of new stuff. I let myself off the hook and bought some new books during Boxing Week. Right now, its back to no more new books until I decrease the list. With that said, there is a revival and continuing through all the Kindle books. This year’s Goodreads Challenge is to read 35 books.

  • The Classics Adventure: I took a year off of this project but its back! Part of my unread Kindle books that I put off were Classics. Some titles I do want to get through: Northanger Abbey, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, A Tale of Two Cities, Treasure Island, Great Expectations, Gulliver’s Travels, Madame Bovary, What Maisie Knew, North and South.

  • Unread Physical Books: Last year, I sadly neglected my physical unread books so I’m working on that this year. One of them is trying to kickstart my Stephen King novel reading along with some other titles like Salem’s Lot, Hollow City, Ready Player One, The Fate of Ten, The Catcher in the Rye.

Movies & TV

Movies and TV is a huge chunk of here. I have to admit that and if you haven’t noticed, by the end of 2016, I was trying to slow that down a little. As much as I love watching movies, I had a block in writing reviews. It is also why I’m happy that I added in the TV Binge segment quite a bit.

  • Unwatched Movie Collection: I updated our movie collection this year and while I have stopped a lot of movie buying (saving once again), I realized that there’s a ton of movies there that I haven’t seen. This year’s mission is to get through them.
  • Other movies: New Releases (look at Anticipated 2017 Movies post HERE), Netflix Originals, Oscar Nominations (in January/February))

Miscellaneous/Monthly Segments

  • Monthly segment: Music Obsessions will stay on the first Sunday of every month!
  • Game Warp: I will continue to post up the updates to the Game Warp Podcast release. Those are twice a month usually unless there are some special segments. More info can be found on That Moment In or our Game Warp Facebook page. Also, we just set up the Twitch channel with a stream schedule coming up soon.
  • My Weekly Adventures: This is currently a biweekly segment right now. However, this comes to what I talked about earlier about resolutions. I have been doing event posts and haul and travel in separate posts, so I try to not cover those in the weekly adventures making it hard to get a lot of stuff to talk about on there. However, I like the fact that I share a snippet of my personal goals to share. You all don’t realize it but a lot of times it keeps me accountable. With that said, this year, I have set myself an ultimatum to finish my Grade 10 piano so I’ll probably start sharing that journey a little and maybe post up some piano pieces. You can criticize or not but at least it keeps me practicing piano and keeping that solid in the schedule instead of always pushing it in a lower priority. Also, I need to get back to working out and training for at least a 5 km marathon this year. So two new segments aside from Cute Kitty Moments, along with other random updates.
  • Other: Montreal Events & Unboxing

For some highlight months (which haven’t changed much):

  • January: Housekeeping and updating is going to be the priority for the first week. That includes wrapping up leftover material from 2016. Some TV binges and the Netflix A-Z.  Aside from that, I’m working on getting a domain or at least, working on an official Tranquil Dreams header by January 17th which is the blogiversary and I don’t want to drag that out anymore.
  • February: Valentine’s Marathon is the first half of the month. I’m putting together what movies to watch. It might not be romantic comedies but I will try to get The Choice to keep up with the Nicholas Sparks adaptations.
  • October: Halloween Marathon! For now, its a toss-up between a few franchises. I believe Final Destination is a high possibility at this point.
  • December: Holiday Marathon! This might have some changes seeing as the selection is getting slim.

That’s it! Congrats and Thanks are in order if you made it all the way here!
I’d also like to share that I’m working on a project with my husband which I will announce soon! As well as a Youtube segment for my channel!

I’m looking forward to 2017. Hope you are too!
If you have any movie or book suggestions, please do share with me.  I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for them or maybe they will be in my list.

Ten Anticipated Movies of 2017!

2017 is here! I’m sorry for the tardiness of posting up the 2017 outlook post. I’m working on that and just settling on a few little decisions that I haven’t made up my mind on but that should be up tomorrow. However, in the mean time, I feel super late talking about my list of anticipated movies of 2017 and this post is going up later than usual also but its the holiday and I’m taking it easy.

Before we jump into the list, please note, this is preliminary and usually doesn’t include any indie movies because I usually don’t catch on to those until very close to release date or a ton of you have talked about it or Fantasia. Or I’m too busy with Netflix movies to look too much into it.

And you’d like to check out anticipated games of 2017, you can find that over at That Moment In HERE! I’m not doing a separate post talking about this so I figured I’ll just give it a mention here in case it interests you. This post is a collaboration with my Game Warp co-host but our choices are pretty similar with just a few exceptions.

Without further delay, here is my ten anticipated movies of 2017 in the order of release (according to Cinema Montreal site).

XXX: The Return of Xander Cage
(January 20)

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
(January 27)

Beauty and the Beast
(March 17)

The Fate of the Furious
(April 14)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2
(May 5)

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2

Alien: Covenant
(May 19)

Wonder Woman
(June 2)

Spiderman: The Homecoming
(July 7)

Jumanji
(July 28)

No trailer yet…

Superheroes, sequels and remakes is what this year’s anticipated movies for me is all about. It kind of makes it seem like a little scary because we all know how these things can just really go completely wrong. While a lot of people are done with Resident Evil or just haven’t really liked it from the beginning, I’ve liked it a lot for the “so bad its awesome” factor. I like the action and the over the top and everything that is wrong with it. I’m super excited for Beauty and the Beast and actually my girl friends are pretty much decided to go see that one. Hopefully everything will work out. The wildcard in this list goes to Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 which is a French-Canadian film that had a huge following back in 2006 for its first film. I have no idea how it took ten years or eleven at the time of release to get it out but I’m pretty stoked about it.

And now for some honorable mentions and other titles that has me intrigued but a little skeptical.

Honorable Mentions:

  • The Lego Batman Movie
  • Logan
  • Power Rangers
  • Pitch Perfect 3
  • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
  • IT

Intrigued but Unsure:

  • Monster Trucks
  • Before I Fall
  • The Space Between Us
  • World War Z 2

What movies are you anticipating in 2017?
